Looking for advice on a external mic for the T5i. I am trying to get rid of the internal noise that the T5i creates in the video mode.

I use a Zoom H1 with my T4i. It cost around $100, although there are more expensive alternatives. I bought the (rather expensive) cable to connect it to the camera, but have never used it. The H1 is a recorder, rather than just a mic. I mount it on top of the T4i, but also let the camera record its own audio. Because I normally shoot in church with multiple cameras, I use the H1 as the main audio, and sync all the cameras to that track when I edit the video together.

The audio is significantly cleaner than that of any of the cameras when shooting indoors. If you shoot outdoors, though, you will need a wind 'muff' for the recorder. I used this setup to shoot an outdoor wedding for a friend, and the H1 picked up more wind noise than the internal audio of the camera.

One of the options that I have seen is the Shure VP83F LensHopper Shotgun Mic that can record to the camera and its buit in recorder. But I am confused over the many different mics available; don't know which way to go.

I own a t3i and I use this mike with excellent results. It's not cheap but gives me excellent audio clarity and sound quality.

Thanks Jimmy, the Shure VP83F is the same mic with a built in recorder and cost an additional hundred dollars.

I often use my 60D and T3i to record concerts. First, what lens are you using. On a T5i using anything but an STM lens will result in the sound of auto focusing being picked up by the mics. I use the RODE Stereo VideoMic Pro mounted to my hot shoe. Unlike most RODE camera mics, this one was designed especially for music recordings.

Check out Rode video mics. Do the job well.

What noise is it that you are hearing?

I have a T5i and have taken video oudoors with occasional wind noise on a windy day which is understandable.
I have also taken video inside an abbey where the only noise I could hear on the video was the occasional scuffling of people in the background.

As another member has already stated - you need the stm lens if you want silent focussing. Alternatively turn the auto focus off and focus manually.

The noise is audio noise produced by the auto gain control turning up the gain during quiet parts of the filming.

I know the sort of noise you mean but cannot say that my camera has every displayed this problem even in a very quiet abbey?

The auto gain control would most likely give the same problem even with a $100+ external microphone as it is not the mic causing the problem.

There is a free program called Magic Lantern that sits on your memory card and gives dozens of extra functions to the camera. One of these functions is a manual volume control.

Check it out: http://www.magiclantern.fm/

Highly recommended, especially for video and may well solve your problems. Read instructions carefully, but it is very solid.

I would still recommend an external mic for quality....

I purchased the Shure VP83. This is the version that does not have the recorder. I purchased it after reading some of the negative reviews of some of the RODE mics. Short answer, I LOVE this external mic which I place on my Nikon D610 for use when I do video. It was recently reduced to $199. A few months ago, I think I paid around $230 or $240.

I have two: My Rode is great but Takstar SGC-598 does a pretty good job also at a lower price.
