http://www.gitzo.com/gitzo-grease-2-pcs-kit Gitzo leg locking systems are designed to serve for a life time and to always perform at their best. In order to help these components to deliver their mission, it is recommended to always use the proper grease every time your tripod is cleaned. Gitzo uses a special product that guarantees a smooth operation and protects the metal surfaces from excessive wearing over time. Furthermore, thanks to its special formula, it is not sticky in order to avoid attracting dust, sand and other dirt that may dramatically reduce the locking system life time. This grease is now available in convenient small tubes sold in a set of two. Each tube is enough to lubricate a four section tripod. We always recommend to use a minimal quantity of grease. An excessive amount may attract undesired dirt and reduce the locking ability of the system.

That was a really good read... I have not Deep Cleaned my Gitzo as yet but after 4 years of really great service... It may be time. If for not other reason that it is winter and I am recovering from spinal surgery (L-3 4 &5 fused) - So this might give me something to do. :-)
Thank You for the posting.

Hello, what do you guys use on a gitzo tripod to grease the flashings? Thanks..any alternatives to gitzo grease?
Amazing that this post occurred. I just found something that I was going to create a thread about on UHH.
First, let me reprise my background. BS in Mechanical Technology, Purdue '77. Graduate of National Camera, Denver, CO. with a diploma in Photo Equipment Repair. Owned Operated a photo repair shop on Long Island for about 10 years.
I recently bought a new bicycle and at Tempe Bicycle I found a lubricant "White Lightning Easy Lube." It is a liquefied wax which solidifies when applied. I have been using it on my tripods, monopod and heads. It doesn't attract wax (which silicone does) not greasy and the best tripod lube I've ever seen. Beats the Gitzo Lube which I used to use.

These instructions are for Carbon Fiber Tripods, but should work for aluminum tripods as well only using lube.

Probably any MOLYBDENUM grease. A warning though. A grease will attract dirt. You might want to consider a dry solution such as graphite. It's a bit abrasive but shouldn't be a problem.
Graphite is not abrasive.

Stay with MT Shooter's advise.
Purchase Naval Jelly at any Hardware Store, very reasonable and it goes a long way.

Go to the RRS website and search tripod maintenance.directions including grease for Gitzo as well as RRS tripods.hope this helps. I may have to pick your brain on Iceland as it is on my short term list of places to go and shoot the northern lights etc. also the pics are super.--Rich

Naval Jelly isn't a lubricant it is a remover of rust and corrosion and a lubricant should be used after the naval jelly.
