Pixma Pro-100

The current Canon rebate makes the Pixma Pro-100 a tempting option to replace my failing Epson C88 inkjet printer.

I realize that the Pro-100 has been designed as a photo printer, and as such, consumes quite a bit of ink, - as well as desk space.

As a text-document printer, however, can any Pro-100 user on the Hog comment on the printer's black ink consumption when used as a regular document printer?

A standard black ink cartridge for the C88 is rated for 400 pages and costs $20.32 at B&H.

I do not see a "page rating" for the Pro-100 black ink cartridge, which sells for $16.99.

No info available on whether the ink cartridge capacities are equivalent either.

Can I assume that both the Pixma P-100 and my old Epson C88 use only black ink when printing a document in black text? - or is color ink thrown into the mix somehow?

If, hypothetically, I were to use the Pro-100 as a color photo printer, say, 50% of the time and as a document printer 50% of the time, - and as a photo printer only on weekends  - are there any problems I should anticipate regarding head cleaning and excessive ink consumption? - i.e., as a result of insufficient use.

A lot of positive reviews out there, but any feedback about the Pixma Pro-100 from the Hog membership would be greatly appreciated.

Bruce....I got tired of depleting my color cartridges in my Epson when I just wanted to print text, so I've purchased a wireless Brother lazer monochrome printer. I got a good deal just after CyberMonday of $99 on an all-in-one. It came with a cartridge that will print 700 pages. A $40 cartridge will print 1200 pages and a $60 cartridge will print 2400.

If you need a new Epson, I've got an Epson Photo Stylus Printer (I think that's what it's called) that I won't be using. I'd sell it reasonably.

I've printed both documents and envelopes on my Pro-100. They are gorgeous. But recently I bought a $75 dollar Brother laser printer because the prints are about 3 or 4 cents per page. I know the Canon Pro-100 can't come close.

Other than ink cost, I don't think there would be any problems with head cleaning.

The current Canon rebate makes the Pixma Pro-100 a... (show quote)

Merry Christmas Bruce. I have used Canon printers for quite a time now. I currently use a Pixma 5320. It has a separate black tank designed for text only so I have to assume the Pro 100 would be the same.

Good luck, Happy New Year.

The Pixma PRO-100 has a photo black, a deep grey, and a light gray cartridges, as well as color cartridges. None are designated as text black.

I weekly print 19x13-inch borderless color images. I use an old H-P printer for all of my text printing.

I ave the Pro 100 and an old cheap Canon (got it free with a Macbook 10 years ago) for documents. Personally, I don't like running regular paper in the Pro 100 except for the periodic maintenance cleaning.

The worst thing you can do with any printer is to leave it unused.
I am still using as one of three printers an old
Epson A3 1290 from 1999. It prints about 150 A3 Colour prints a year and 100 or so Monochrome. I always make sure it prints at least an A6 print every week. This keeps the head moist and no chance to dry out

Thank you all for your comments regarding the Pro-100.

I realize that it is difficult to estimate any printer's consumption of black ink for document printing. (I certainly would not be able to tell you how many average pages of text I can print out on a cartridge of black ink with my old Epson Stylus C88.)

Based on your subjective experience, however, is there any Pro-100 user who feels that the black ink consumption cost for document printing with the Pro-100 is comparable to the cost of an ink-jet printer that they own currently or have owned in the past.

Can the Pro-100 software be set or programed to print a text document when not printing a color photo? Is there provision for "draft mode?"

In the absence of hard data on black ink consumption for document printing, perhaps the answer to these last 2 questions will provide a bit of insight into whether the Pro-100 was ever intended by the designers to double as a document printer.

Thanks again for your help.

Bruce

I have a Canon Pro-100 and a new ink set of 8 runs about $120.
It's an expensive way to print ordinary black & white. This printer was part of a Canon camera/lens/printer/paper promotion which has since expired but I see one or two each week for sale, brand new still in the unopened box minus the bar code required for the rebate, in the NYC Craigslist, anywhere for $130-200. I did buy one of these as a backup.

No, the Brother Laser monochrome printers only do 8.5x11. Available at Amazon, the lowest priced models run less than $80 and $90 (refurbished) with the initial toner drum yielding 700 pages @ 5% while the high yield cartridge (under $50) yields 2600 pages @ 5%. They are highly rated by the reviewers and I concur (have 2).
