I have used a Canon 7D for years and recently bought a 6D. I am pursuing night photography and find the BULB feature confusing. When I change to the BULB feature, it requires me to hold the shutter button down and it takes the picture as soon as I release the button. If I hold it down for 50 seconds and release it, it takes a 50 second image. But what if I want to take one for 6 hours? Do I have to stand by the camera with my finger on the shutter button? Help!
Tried that too. One click and release results in the same manner, a 1 second exposure.

Mine has setting for long exposure click to release at end of exposure. Yours should have the same or similar feature check the manual.

My remote shutter release has a button that you can press in then slide forward into a locked on position, the exposure continues until I slide the button back to release it allowing an exposure to last as long as my battery. Which remote shutter release are you using?
Vello wired or free wire.
There's a bulb timer setting in your menus. Just look up 'Bulb' in your manual index and follow the steps.
I see your cable now, its an electronic version of the old wire push version I had on my film camera though even that had a twist lock function once pressed in.
I am not sure you can use that cable for a duration longer than 30 seconds which is the Bulb function limit imposed by your camera.

You can just like the older cable release. Dam I miss those.

Push and slide the button forward to lock it in the on position Slide back to unlock it.
Look simular to mine.
An rc-6 I remote also works in bulb mode. Set the shutter to 2-second or 10-second delay, press the rc-6 button once to open shutter and press again to close shutter. I use my cell phone stop watch app for time duration.
The best answer is to use a remote switch: RS80n3 or timer remote controller TC 80N3. I used VELLO BT0313 and that device does NOT work on the 6D.
