Canon refurbished Problem - resolved

I told everyone that I would let them know how this was resolved. After sending my 50 1.4 back to Canon for repair the 3rd time and talking to several managers I was finally able to talk to someone with access to the Presidents Office. Bottom line, I was able to stop them from sending it back for the third time and it was replaced with a new 50 1.4 which I asked them to check out on Camera before sending it. This was accomplished to my satisfaction as the new one is very good. However, it took a lot of time and going through several Managers to finally get to the right person and get it resolved. I might also add that "refurbished" does not mean that they actually did refurbish the lens. Stated by them and after looking it up on Wiki found that electronics that are sold as that can just be returns, slightly used etc. So buyer beware. Not actually refurbished. Canon also stated that. So, the thought that it's best to buy Refurbs from Canon because their techs have worked on them is not a truth. Found that out the hard way. I think if I buy refurbished again it will be from a reputable camera dealer that you can deal with much faster and can ask questions about the particular lens your buying. Thankful this is over as it was an ordeal.

I do not think Canon would open themselves to a product liability suit because of false advertising so I looked it up!

Hi sigkid!

Here's what we qualify as a refurbished product here at Canon:

Products are returned to Canon for a variety of reasons, including overstock balancing, miscellaneous returns from retailers, suspected mis-operation, and minor damage to the box. The products that are serviced have undergone rigorous function and cosmetic inspections by trained Canon technicians and fully meet new product operational specifications and selected cosmetic standards established by Canon U.S.A. Inc. These refurbished products must pass a comprehensive quality assurance inspection before final packaging and shipment to customers.

Our refurbished products carry a one year limited warranty.

We hope this information is helpful to you!

Perhaps the person you spoke to did not know what they were talking about.

The next time I would ask if the item was damaged and repaired or if the item was returned because the box was marred, or for over stock issues, etc. If the former it was gone over if the later it was not, but it was never used.

I would bet all companies do the same.

Sorry to see you had such a bad expereince. I had a problem with an auto-focus issue on a 70-300 and sent it in.It came back good as new and guess what???? no charge. All I had to pay was shipping. It was 2 yrs old and wouldnt auto-focus. I also had good luck with Sigma. I dont know why you had such a run around.
There are times when your dealing with large companies that you can get lost in the shuffle. Sometimes customer service needs a wake-up call and you gave them one
Glad all worked out for you!

I think if you dig into it a bit more you will find that the refurbishing process is something like this:
First they visually inspect an item and then check that it functions within established parameters. For returns or overstock that is probably the end of it, but for anything that doesn't pass initial inspection they then determine if it is worth repair. If so, that is when they actually disassemble and repair it. That system is pretty much industry standard for lightly used components. The only reason I can think of that the OP's problem wasn't discovered immediately is that for some reason it didn't show up in the initial inspection. Perhaps the tech just assumed that the OP wasn't using it properly or had camera issues. Anyway, it's fixed now!

I understand the various reasons a product might come back into the OEM's hands for resale as refurbished. I understand, too, that there may often be no need for any actual refurbishment. But at a minimum I would expect them to inspect and test it to ensure it operates properly before sending it back out the door again. Thankfully, I've had no problems w/my refurb 7D and 70-200 lens. Glad they fixed your problem.

You know what, all I can do is let you know how things went for me. And, also what Canon themselves told me. It is not false advertisement to label them Refurbished as you will see if you look it up on Wiki. Same as Canon told me. The last time they fixed it, it came back to with something bent in it. It was a mess. Given credit where it's do I did end up with a new one that works great. But, it was a real time consuming and unpleasant experience to finally get something done. It was the Lens as also verified by Canon. Not the OP!
