I spent a couple afternoons in the backyard photographing anything flying.
I was using a Nikon D600 w/ Tamron SP 150-600mm F5-6.3 Di VC USD Lens.

Great photo project, Craig, and you have some super pictures. Gorgeous birds in your second photo, and the coloring is similar to that of the Black-headed Grosbeak, but that's not what it is. The bill is way too long and sharp. I wish I could identify it, but I'm afraid I'm not familiar with birds of the western states.

Some good ones there, Craig. Not sure if I'd classify the Boeing as a close up, though, lol. You have a great lens there. :-) :-) :D :D

Your right Donna, now that I have a close-up photo of the birds I see the beak is different. So I'm not sure what it is. Maybe someone can help?

Thank you DOOK for taking the time to look at my work. It's a brand new Lens and I'm just getting the feel of it.

Hope so. In the meantime I'll look again. I'd really like to know.

They are a bird that is just here for the Winter. So I can't find them in the So Cal Book.

I forgot to ask you about its size. About warbler size or larger?

Your bird is a Varied Thrush, Craig. Like you said, it winters in your area. Beautiful birds!

Varied thrush is right on -- they have an eerie, ghostly song, usually in deep woods in spring. Took me a while to ID the bird from the song in AK as I never saw it. The insect in # 6 is a harmless syrphid or flower fly, showing off confusing warning coloration.

Thank you Donna and relbugman for helping to identify the mystery birds and flower fly. I guess we all mimic something at some time. Both of those critters fooled me.
