dust inside the lens

A problem that plagues many of us. Can any of the dust that accumulates inside a lens body be removed without taking the lens apart? How does dust get inside in the first place? Would it be possible to vacuum the dust out? Looking forward to comments.

It is a zoom lens I assume? My understanding is that it happens while zooming in and out and is somewhat unavoidable.

I have also been told that if it is not affecting your image quality then don't be too concerned with it.

I think you have to have the lens serviced by the mfg to get the dust out which I understand requires dis-assembly.

Unless it is a slide zoom like the EF 100-400 1st generation, the lens should be sealed and not have dust in it.

I would recommend a professional to check it out so your warranty is not compromised.

Zoom lenses create a "Piston" effect and actually sucks in air when zoomed. This is how most dust gets inside a lens assembly. Unfortunately, the only way to get rid of it is to take the glass out and clean everything thoroughly. With most lenses, this isn't too difficult but it needs to be re-calibrated after re-assembly.

Hi. My name is Rick. I’m the owner and lead technician at Discount Camera Repair and a member in good standing here at the UHH. I’ve been doing repairs for other members here at greatly discounted rates and would be glad to help.

I'd be more than happy to repair the lens for you and keep the cost as low as possible. If you’re interested, please respond by private message or simply reply to this post.
