i have a 50mm lens for my canon eos rebel xs does that mean the size of the filters should be 50mm also? i know its probably a dumb question. thanks!

No, the 50mm you describe is the focal length. The filter size is the diameter of the screwin in front of the front element.
Common filter sizes for primary lenses are 49 through 72 mm.
There is usually a theta marking with a mm size. See the picture below.
No. A 50mm lens may have front filter threads of 45, 49, 52, 55, 58mm, etc. You need to know how wide the front of the lens is.
Look on the inside of the front lens cap. It probably has a marking for what mm diameter.

The absolute easiest way to tell what filter size your lenses require, is to look inside your lens cap, it will be molded right into the plastic lens cap.

That marking is the Greek letter phi, the symbol for diameter.
