This is a V4 or Valentine 4 Broken Die Half dime. This may be the oldest coin that I have. 1:1 Macro and cropped.

Does look old and well used and at 1843. It is well taken.

I have a small spattering of coins that I found interesting as I grew up. Unfortunately coin shows are often about buy low and sell high taking advantage of those who have little knowledge of what they have. I have made some good, bad and just plain ugly deals along the way. This coin is old and there were over 1 million struck in this year. There are at least 2 versions of the cracked die and this is the most common and of course the least valuable.

I collected as a kid: scavenged the ditches for pop bottles which I redeemed for 2 cents & then purchased rolls of pennies at the bank. My collection has little value and lots of wear. Nothing near that old.

We used to ride the roads and side roads of NM looking for pop bottles. It was amazing the number of bottles that were tossed back when there was a bounty on them. ;)

Very nice. That coin looks to be in great shape considering it's over 150 years old!!

I did some of my early chip shots with the chip sitting on a coin to give a perspective size reference. First it was a pristine dime, I thought!! I couldn't believe how much surface damage the dime had. I went to our local coin shop in Sears and told them what I was trying to do and they gave me an uncirculated penny. After I took my first images the penny showed many surface blemishes!!

Both the dime and penny looked beautiful to the unaided eye, totally different story when magnified. Is this common, do most coins look like this when you zoom in?

Nice coin.... I have a small collection. Used to be a lot bigger until it was all stolen back in 1980... Had Large cents, et al.... Broke my heart....Still have several older Silver dollars though

Regular issue coins have a hard life even uncirculated coins. The coins are basically just dumped onto fast moving belts after striking that feed them into spinning funnel collection hoppers. Even the loading into mint rolls is anything but gentle. Its a wonder that they come out as nice looking as they do but yes they usually have small marks on them.

Proof and special coins like the Mint issued American Eagle "Silver Dollar" are treated far differently so that collectors can get nearly or in some cases perfectly struck coins. I just ordered a Mint State 70 American Eagle graded by the most reputable grading service. Mint State 70 is considered perfectly struck without the bangs and dings you see on standard uncirculated coins.

Some of these coins can get pretty pricey as they get older.

Aside from yearly proof sets, my collection fits into a small hand made wooden jewelry box that my Father left me.
Its about 10" X 6" X 5" with a lift out wooden tray that divides it in half. I try to pretty much leave them alone but have them in their little cardboard window flips so I can at least see them. I started off as most kids do collecting pennies. Never finished the first Lincoln cent book but did complete the second. Never did get really serious about collecting but picked up the occasional coin as time has gone by.
Thanks and really sorry to hear that you were robbed. That's almost the ultimate violation.

Thanks Craig. No where near as sophisticated as you are doing now.
These are just straight 1:1 single shots that I cropped for detail. No post prod, they are as shot.

Good stack, guessing the cracked die results in thin raised lines on the back of the coin?

Thank you but single shots. I did not like the stack I got so. Yes the cracks are little raised lines.
