Shot 1:1 with 65mm extension. Makes this almost 2:1.
Some great focus. But a lot of burnout on the edges facing the Flash.
I've been trying a sheet of paper on the other side of the coin as a reflector. It gives me a little balance. The reflection is still there. Jim would a ring flash help this?

I've posted a comparison of ring versus box earlier.
It's a matter of what you want to pull out and what you want to hide.
Ring on this would have been pretty bright so I used the box to make it more even.

In my opinion, no on the ring flash. Based on the posted example on this forum & personal testing, a diffused flash trumps the ring flash in terms of more even lighting and fewer hot spots.

Thank you for the thumbs up.
I hope you're having a good Thanksgiving.

Thank you LoneRangFinder. I am getting a Controlled Output LED Ring Flash with Diffusers tomorrow.
I also got my 6"x8" Softbox to test. I am hoping I can use it in this Bas Relief application.
Nice coin pic, and I really like the subject. Is that the Mayan calendar or some other relic?
From the highlights on the edges of the features, it appears your light is at 45-deg or so to the horizontal. Can you bring the light up at a higher angle? One of the goals of coin photography is to maximize illumination on the top surfaces of the devices. This will create shadows on the sides of the devices rather than highlights.
You can also improve the apparent diffusion by blocking the light coming from the center of your diffusion box. This technique effectively splits the diffuser into two sources, and eliminates direct reflection from the center. Black tape works well. You'll need a bit longer exposure time but the balance should improve.
To me it is an excellent shot, I guess I don't have the eye of some UHHers. I have tried working with extenders and never had much luck.

My thoughts exactly. I bought an inexpensive led ring that I had to send back. I couldn't get it to synch with my shutter. I've always liked the LED ring shots with all the pretty little dots around eyes.

Thank you very much for the compliment. Extenders are pretty touchy but sometimes can really pull that extra notch of detail.

Yes the light was mounted on an external bracket and space limits had me angling back a bit more so that I could wash the face of the coin. What you see picking up highlights on the edge is a bezel that the coin sits in to make it a necklace. Eww sticky black tape on my new box flash surface? I don't think so just yet. ;o)

Thanks for the heads up on the sticky tape residue. But this is just the answer I was looking for so I'll improvise something instead of the tape.

Cut a piece of thin card stock to fit snugly inside and against the front.
That should have the same blocking effect.
