I love trees. I will not live where there are no tress, I feel exposed...lol This is on my second photo shoot. I was to shoot landscapes. I was using my Cannon Power Shot SX, on manual focus.
Good Photographs - especially the first and third. Notice though that you came close to blowing out the highlights. Have you looked into using HDR - a great method for taking photos when the range of exposure is so great. Locations look familiar. I lived in Inwood for 2 years before retiring and moving south.

at what time of the day did you shoot? The sky is overexposed and the colors flatened. I assume you shot in the affternoon. The same location early morning or just before sunset would give the leaves a more warm color as well as the sky. I believe a neutral density filter would have saved your sky. When i shoot in the afternoon it is usually closeups or when I am shooting textures and need hard shadows.
Good suggestions I always had trouble using density filters and am trying out HRD to solve such exposure problems

All on the same day in the afternoon. I did learn yesterday about Histograms, they tell me what is what...I know kinda simple but it's new to me...lol. I'll get back with you on the information....This was at Harpers Ferry.
I liked the second one the best.
I have used HDR when ever the range of light is to much for the camera, one has to either blow out the highlights of lose whats in the shadows. Photomatix offers a free time trial of their Photomatix Light. This is a great learning tool and if you like the program the purchase price is just $39.00. Outdoor Photographer magazine has had a couple of articles on HDR the past few motnhs. Also worth checking.
Cat, I found the top photo, too much light. The middle photo, I would hang on a wall, beautiful photo. The bottom photo also has too much light. But as you said you have learned what to do. Get up early and shoot these places in the early morning sun.
Keep shooting

@Cecil, all I can tell you (newbie) is to practice practice practice. I shoot hundreds of photos when I go out. I shoot what catches my eye or I can look at something and think if I shoot this way this is what it will look like. I try and remember the 1/3 rule but I find I hardly ever use it. Most of my work I do in Macro. My landscapes are mostly in old civil war towns and I am looking back in time when I shoot, at least that is my goal. My imagination runs away with me.

Hi Sinatraman.... What strenght of NDF do you recomend? Do you stay down in the lower end around one, or up at about 4 or so? Appreciate any info or what you suggest.
Thanks... Mike
