Canon SX50 vs Canon SX60

I thought this would be a no brainer decision - buy a great walk around camera for my wife so she would quit using my MKIII. SX60 is newer technology so might as well get the latest. Checked it out and was very disappointed in how slow the auto focus is at the longer telephoto settings. And it seemed really hard to hold it steady (guessing some of that is due to the light weight and smaller size than what I'm used to). We hike so the wider angle of the SX60 is a plus and she's also a birder so the longer zoom is also a plus. That being said, there's a good number of reviews/side-by-side comparisons and blog posts that seem to point to the SX50 being the better choice. Has anyone moved from the SX50 to the SX60 and would you do it again if you had it to do over? Also, does auto focus speed up in outdoor lighting? I was in a camera store and gave the camera sharp well lit edges and it seemed like an eternity compared to what I'm used to. Final thoughts, difference in cost is not an issue and I'm not interested in looking at other brands - been a Canon guy since 1973 and to old to change now. Thnx in advance.

DBaltzer, I've owned both the SX50 and the SX60, and yes, I would do it again. Not that there's a whole lot of difference in the performance of the two ..... I like the longer range and the upgraded processer. Also, the grip is just a bit larger on the SX60 and feels more comfortable in my large hands. That being said, you can get a really good price on the SX50 and it might be a good way at acquainting your wife with the series, maybe to upgrade later.

I've posted a number of photos from the SX60, shot in various camera modes that you might like to review with an eye to results. You could also show your wife what the camera will do out in the field.

performance wise, there isn't much difference between the two except the longer reach of the SX60.

Some of the best I have seen from this camera! Makes me think that it will be as good as the SX50 if not better for most people.

I never had a SX50. Before I ended up with an SX60HS I seriously tried a HX400v and a P600. I think the SX60HS is superior for what it is.

I have the SX30, SX50 and now the SX60. Really prefer the SX60 over the other two. I've found that it is much easier to hold steady when using the much improved electronic view finder.

The SX60 or the SX50 would be a good choice. The SX60 is slightly larger and fits in my hand better.

I think the image quality of the SX50 is slightly better. The EVF of the SX60 is much better than the SX50. The autofocus on the SX60 is slightly slower than the SX50 but not so much that you would really notice. The AF tracking on the SX60 works pretty well- I was pleasantly surprised.

I think the SX60 is worth the extra because of the improved EVF and the design that fits better in my hand.

If you are used to the 5D MK III, it will take some time adjusting to the SX50/SX60. The AF and shutter lag will never come close to that of the 5D MK III. I think in many ways, the SX50/SX60 has a higher learning curve than the 5D MK III.
