New Nikon D750 with FX 28-300mm lens. Would a doubler be a recommended accessory for the occasional long shot?

When you say doubler, do you mean a 2x teleconverter? I don't know if that lens is compatible with a TC and you would probably not be impressed with the image quality, especially using a 2x.

Nikon 2x or any of their converters, no. They will not work with it. There are other brands that may work, but the previous poster was correct...not something I would recommend with that particular lens.

I have both 1.4 and 2x Nikon converters and they are only used on specific Nikkor lenses I own and not on a regular basis. If you require longer than 300mm, look at purchasing a longer lens. Sigma or Tamron if you haven't got the money. Nikkor if you want the Nikon Brand, but much more expensive.

Do not even TRY to put a TC on that lens, you could easily destroy it by trying. The combo would result in what is called an "interference fit". This means the rear element on the lens protrudes back past the lens mount and will contact the element in the TC when zoomed back to the wide end of its focal length.

When it comes to TC's there are two general rules of thumb that will always keep your gear safe. Never mount one with a crop sensor lens, and never mount one on a variable aperture lens. Granted there are exceptions, but these will always keep you from damaging a lens by trying it when you are not sure about the fit.

I play with a 1.4 and a 1.7 Nikon TC and an off brand 2TC. You can stack these and get some pretty good Moon shots.:) But that is about all I use them for.. You would be better off to just get a longer lens. On a side note. Does the 750 have the option to use DX lenses? I would think you could use the 28-300 and get the cropped sensor, and that would give you a little more reach.

Unlikely to fit on that zoom but that lens has a weakness - it tends to be soft at 300. Putting a 2x TC would also degrade the image quality even further. TC's especially at the high end will degrade your image quality. In fact they all degrade to a small percentage to up to 26% according to a "Photography Life" article.

Forget Nikon TC on that lens and a 2X - but if you must, try a Kenko 1.4X - you will be manual focusing ( I think ??) But with that camera, you may be just as well off cropping your way longer.

Try the 2x Kenko Pro and see if you like the results. I use one with my D300 and the 18-300 in bright daylight.

As a caution- if you have a large camera store nearby let them mount the TC you are interested in on their D750 and 28-300nikon lens to see that everything clears and focuses. If you are happy, buy the TC from them. That is how I bought the Kenko Pro 2X I use.

I have that exact same setup and it works just fine with a Kenko 2X Teleplus Pro 300. Auto focus does not work unless you are zoomed pretty much all the way out. But VR does turn on and image quality is pretty good if you are patient.

Attached is an image of the full moon. As you can see in the EXIF data - 600mm
