How many of everyone out there are still using Apple Aperture? Do you plan to stay with it or ultimately switch over to Lightroom and the cloud?

I am still using Aperture. I will wait to see what Photos has to offer before I decide wether or not to switch to Lightroom.

I have purchased LightRoom and am in the process of moving my photo libraries (50K photos) from Aperture to LightRoom.

What process are you using to move your photographs? I understand that there are some tools out there to help with this migration and at least some (if not most) of the metadata (keywords, etc.) can be brought over "automatically". But - any post-processing effects cannot be copied over since Aperture and Lightroom use different algorithms to make those updates. Is that true?

I export an Aperture folder (370 of them) to a folder on my hard drive (I use Mac), then import that folder into LightRoom. I am doing this one folder at a time so that I have complete control over the process. Then, in LightRoom, I add the same keywords that I used in Aperture to the photos in the new LightRoom folder of the same name.

I don't use the original raw file during the export and import, I export the updated jpg file from Aperture, then import the Aperture adjusted file so that the photos come into lightRoom already updated the way I want to view and use them. Each day at the end of a LightRoom session, the entire LightRoom library thus far is backed up.

I know that my process is very tedious and there are new software offerings to do this for me, but I think that my photos are too important to use new software that might not be 100%. It has taken me about 2 months thus far, and I assume it will take at least another 2 months to complete the process. Once done, I feel that nothing will be lost in the process using my manual methods.

I will maintain both the Aperture libraries and the LightRoom libraries until I feel secure enough with the use of LightRoom to delete Aperture from my Mac. Currently, all new photos are maintained on a separate set of folders on my hard drive and processed, but not as yet stored, in either Aperture or LightRoom. These will be converted once I am done with the current process.

Could you not have just titled this "Apple Apeture" rather than "Apeture"?

Thought this was a discussion of a main issue in photography and not an issue of more limited interest.

I fully intend to stay with Aperture. It won't just stop working just because Apple stopped upgrading.

Photos will only run on Yosemite platform.

Thanks for the info! I'm still waiting to see what Apple Photos might have to offer, but have briefly looked at Lightroom in case Photos just doesn't cut it. Still having a hard time with the fact that Apple decided to ditch Aperture.

Apple is not ditching it, just no longer upgrading it.
And as I mentioned earlier, Photos will only run on Yosemite.

Yep - you're absolutely right. My concern is how long it might run as Apple releases new upgrades, but I would guess I have a few years before that becomes a problem. I'm anxious to see what Photos has to offer and if it's a truly viable alternative to Aperture.

That was my feeling as well; keep on using Aperture (not Apple Aperture, so as not to confuse anyone!!!) and see what Photos has to offer. Thanks

A program will not stop running just because there will not be any more upgrades.

Adobe just came out with a plug in to move aperture libraries into lr. You have to upgrade to 5.7 and under file-plug-in extras- you can import libraries. It is slow!

I'm waiting for 'Photo' before I try to move 85,000 pix. I can only hope that there will be a 'level' of 'Photo' that will be Aperture+!
