But my point is that the word "slave" is used in both contexts...both "optical slave" (which the 430EXII cannot do) and wireless slave (which it CAN do but some of my others cannot) It's not enough to just use the word "slave"

The 430exII works with wireless optical(IR).
Ot does not work with wireless RF.

It sure does. It doesn't have IR, I had one.

From the manual:
For details on wireless flash photography and operating the master unit, see the master unitÂ’s instruction manual. The procedure below applies to a master unit attached to the camera and slave unit(s) controlled by wireless.
1 Set the master unit.
Attach Speedlite 580EX, 550EX, ST-
E2, MR-14EX or MT-24EX to the camera and set it as necessary.
2 Set the 430EX as the slave unit. Set the wireless selector to

with all the discussion of the 430EX, you might make an offer to this seller to sell the 430EX II separately: http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-143502-1.html

Thank you for all the advice and help! A speedlight is on my list;just need to research the two Canon options. It's also good to know it's not just me and my complete inability to get good pics and be consistent!!! :)

Hi Patty. I too was having the same dilemma as you, and just purchased a used 580EX on ebay that was in like new condition for $200.00. The best money I have ever spent. My images are now coming out wonderfully. Good luck.

Wow...thank you, EVERYONE!!! I have so much to learn about photography, and I'm so thankful I stumbled onto UHH!!! I'm not very knowledgeable when it comes to flash, so I've much to learn about "masters" and "slaves"; terms I was unfamiliar with until I started reading about them on this site. I'm thinking it might be wise to look into the 580EX, so I'll have more room to grow. Jake, I hope I find a good deal like you did!! Thanks, again, everybody.....I love this group!

Great choice !!
Just be sure to carry lots of extra batteries.
Also get a flash bracket to get the speedlite off of the camera.

Set it for ETTL and high speed sync.
I get great shots at 1/320-400 and f/6-8.

Big Bear, my 580EX came with the bracket. There is even a pocket in the case to store it.

This is the type of bracket I was referring to.

Oops, sorry. I thought you were referring to the plastic stand that comes with the flash.
