Sorry, I should not have assumed that features that exist in my camera would exist in earlier models.

Not a problem, that's why we have discussions.
The 7D was the first to have that ability.

Canons use "Speedlites", Nikons use "Speedlights".
Get yourself a 430 EXII if you like brand names, if not get a Yongnuo YN-568EX TTL. The 430 EXII is a great flash and enough power for most everything you'll want to shoot, but the restrictions relate to the master slave area, something you will learn about with experience. The Yongnuo has more features and functions as a master, has more power and is cheaper. And it has pretty solid reputation. Next pick up the Speedliter's Handbook by Syl Arena. The next thing you'll want to toy with is off camera flash. The 430 works off camera but only as a slave or with some type of cable or remote trigger. The Yongnuo will control it as a master and you don't have to purchase an remote trigger or mess with a cord. Then, have some fun!

Forgot something. You'll want a flash diffuser. The easiest to work with is a simple "Dome Diffuser". 10 bucks most places but I've seen them on EBay for 99 cents with free shipping. Same thing but you have to wait a little longer as it comes from China and the dock strike in CA could slow things down a bit. Don't waste your time with Fongs or fold outs, the domes work great.

The 50D is not capable of using the popup as a master.
The 430exii also can not be used as a master.
The 580exII can be either a master or a slave.
I have an ST-E2 to control both of my speedlites as needed.

I'm curious

Why won't these flashes work as a 'master?' Won't ANY flash trigger a slaved flash, or a flash in slave mode?

Thanks

Well..that's true.

They are not "officially" master capable but if you pop them on lowest power, if you have another flash that will act as an optical slave...then they will do the job. But they aren't masters in the sense that they can "control" a slave flash remotely.

The 580ex will work as a master or slave.
The 430ex will only work on hot shoe or as a slave. It will not work as a master.

Wireless slave only not optical, it does not have an optical slave sensor

But why won't it work? When this flash flashes, won't the slave sendor see that flash and trip the slave? Or do I not understand these 'new-fangled' master/slave flash combinations?

Because the other poster is talking about a wireless master and not an optical master which is what you are talking about

Well of course! The second flash is not a slave if it doesn"t have the sensor. And the sensor has to see the flash from the master to trip.

That seems apples & oranges to me - wireless IS different from the slave sensir seein the light from anothrr flash.

Only works with IR. So it has to be in line of site with the master that is programmed with the same frequency.

They work on IR (infrared) which requires the slaves to be in sight of the master to sense the IR being sent.

The 600ex-rt works with RF (radio frequency) that can be used as a master or slave.
The new EOS bodies have the IR and RF built in to act as a master.

But my point is that the word "slave" is used in both contexts...both "optical slave" (which the 430EXII cannot do) and wireless slave (which it CAN do but some of my others cannot) It's not enough to just use the word "slave"

It is apple and oranges but in this conversation, everyone is using the word "slave" and not defining which they are talking about.
