I was actively taking pictures before Vietnam but took many while I was there. I started with a 35MM Yashica MG-1 rangefinder and after one of the ARVN passengers I was carrying on my helicopter stole it off my seat back as he was exiting the aircraft I moved to a Canon rangefinder. I had a Miranda 35MM SLR at the time which I left at home and picked up a Nikon FTN and Mamiya C330 at the PX on the way home. About half of my shots were from the air and all were slides. I used the pre-paid processing option and never saw what I had taken until I got home. All of 3000+ slides I took are in in pristine shape and have been digitized.

I'm just curious. I bought my first cameras in Vietnam because you could get them cheap at the PXs there. I learned to use the darkroom at Special Services in Qui Nhon. I got hooked and have been ever since.

It appears that a lot of us are of a certain (ahem) age, and from some of the comments I've seen on various threads, I have a feeling that quite a few of us started out in Vietnam. Personally, photography and my USAA membership are the two best things I got from military service :) :)

Was in the Air Force and was stationed a Charleston AFB, SC, in the late 60s and traded a portable stereo and a bunch of albums for a Asahi Pentax H3v that came from Viet Nam by way of one of the guys in the barracks. Shot slides mostly back then and have had a lot of different cameras but still have the H3v.

Bought a Pentax 1000 and a twin lens 2.25 x 3.25 with tilts and swings at Phu Cat Air base 1969-1970 and had a photo hobby shop dark room to use. All long gone stolen while in college.

Would'nt those make a great "Travelogue?? To lure people to Vacation in VietNam, or better yet, to lure them into signing up for the military.???

I think it would be a great idea for us of that afore-mentioned "certain, ahem age" to post some of our VietNam era images here on the hog. I always felt that those of us that SERVED THEN, werehated or ignored. I for one got used to that.

I went over with the 9th Infantry division late 1966 and ended up with the 1st Air Cav in 1967. I bought my first 35mm camera at the px at Bearcat while with the 9th. It was a Yaschica rangefinder. Got me started in photography. I came home with a Canon FTb.

I was an AH1G Cobra pilot in the 101st. Vietnam 70-71. Bought an Olympus Pen FT. Shot a lot of B&W film. Camp Evans had a dark room we could use (only recreation on base....except drinking). I learned how to develop B&W film. I also shot a lot of color slides. Some of the B&W I developed are still in great condition.

[quote=lone ranger]I started my love for photography, when I was 8 years old, when my family got me a kodak brownie hawkeye camera, for my birthday, and now as I approach my 70th birthday, I shoot with a nikon D800 as well as a few other cameras......
as for Vietnam , I served my country there, from 1965-1967 with the 101 Airborne.as a Green beret Special Forces member

My memories of my time in VietNam are many, but one thing I will never forget; so many killed and injured that I (as a Hospital Corpsman) cared for, were of THE 101ST AIRborne Division. SAD FACT.....Thank you for your "airborne" service to our people.. NOT TO THE POLITICIANS, as they are mostly ALL still ASS-HOLES/

I bought my first Nikon in the same PX just befoe returning to civilization. Would have bought it sooner, but cameras did not survive long on the PBRs in 1968/1969. Like so many others, my Nikon and USAA membership were the only good things to come out of the hell hole.

Got my first “serious” camera, a Yashica-J rangefinder, while stationed at NATTC Memphis in 1968. Did all my own developing and printing at the on-base facility. Still have the little gem and many of the old negatives.

I got a Petri for college grad, then off to basic school USMC, then 'Nam. Was a FO, then AO in Loaches(thanks to the AirCav). Never had access to darkroom, would send film out. Upgraded to Asari(?)Pentex, now shoot Nikon. Have boxes of photos that I haven't looked at , but must, lots of kids as we patrolled viles,
and from the loach. Anyone interested in collectable Pentex lenses and camara, pm me. Semper/Fi!!
