As pointed out, they are extra glass in front of your lense and by that I mean a LOT glass. The +10 is very thick.

I just won a Kenko set of Macro Tubes on eBay for $125. There's no glass and this set will allow all the auto functions of your camera and lens. Of course I haven't received the set yet so I don't know how they'll work, but I'm expecting they'll be pretty good until I can afford a macro lens.

Also, I'm pretty sure my 55-300 mm Nikkor kit lens has a macro function, but that may be a function of the camera.

So, there's some more options to mull until you get that macro lens.

I dont know anything about the extension tubes..... can you explain ... do i use them with macro filters?

No. It's a set of three tubes which you put in between the lense and the camera either one by itself or in combination with either or both of the other two, depending on how close you want to get.
I think this is much better than the macro lens.
I think MT Shooter knows something about them.

Are you from New YorK, New York? If you are you can go B&H. There are experts there that can guide you on hand with your search for Micro or Macro lens.

no I'm on there island about 40 min from ny Ive gotten stuff from B &H Like a candy store for photographers. Im going to Berger Bros because I need some seamless white paper and they carry that and picking it up is a lot cheaper than having it shipped so I thought I would pick their brains about some lighting and macro photography

I have several close up filters and finally gave up on them. I assume it's me and not the filters but I just couldn't get the result I was after. I finally bit the bullet and bought the NIKKOR 105mm Macro lens and I love it. I know it's more money than you probably want to spend but you might check with KEH, B&H Photo or Adorama and see if they have anything used.

ok great I never thought of asking retail stores I thought ebay or something and that kind of makes me nervous spending that from someone I do not know. thank you.

Try going to you local camera store and put the macro lens on your camera to test which one you like . I like the 100m range . The macro lens can also be used as a normal lens .

Canon makes a 500D close-up lens that screws on the front of your lens. This is not a set of three lenses. It is available in the $80 - $130 range depending on your lens size. Search out Bryan Peterson on YouTube to see an example of this lens.

I have AF-S Micro-NIKKOR 60mm f/2.8G ED on a D60 also use it with an F mount on the V1. Very sharp. Not good for telephoto, but better than a closeup lens. BTW I do not think you can use close up lense for telephoto Micro/Macro

You could try this one.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/VIVITAR-Series-1-70-210mm-F3-5-Nikon-AIS-Tokina-Macro-Focusing-zoom-AS-IS-/260948702928?pt=Camera_Lenses&hash=item3cc1c136d0#ht_4103wt_1344

Also consider a reversing ring.

You might want to consider a reverse mount threaded lens mount adapter. The adapter snaps onto the lens mount of your camera body, the lens itself threads onto the adapter reversing the lens elements to provide a closer focusing range. You must plan ahead when purchasing the adapter as the threaded mounting must match the objective lens thread diameter.

This option will not replace the true macro lens, but for occasional macro shooting it may provide an acceptable alternative.

To go along with this suggestion, and many others in this thread, you may need a good tripod, cable shutter release, and an adjustable focusing rail mount for the camera to tripod.

If you decide to go the filter route, at least get a two element filter. Both Nikon and Canon make them. They are vastly superior to single filters, and no loss of light.

Also keep in mind with reversing rings, wide angle lenses provide the greatest magnification.

My 20 cents worth (inflation) To start I would get a set of close up diopeters {filters} They are cheap sometimes less than $10 on eBay. They will not give you the tack sharp images of a real macro but I have seen some very good results with them. I would not get ex-tubes they will not give you any better results than the close up filters. Macro lenses have a flat field. If you have a macro lens they are useful if you want to enlarge. Enlarger lenses on bellows work for this too. My advise would be - get the close up diopeters (filters) -- do some close up work. If you like it get a macro lens. Then if you want ge bigger images on your sensor get the extension tubes for your macro. - Dave
