Confused about Watermarks, Copyrights, Logos

I sometimes take photos of running events. The Race Director of my next shoot wants Text or a logo to appear at the bottom of finished prints and digital downloads. I have a watermark in Lightroom 5 that appears when I export to my website (hosted by Zenfolio). However, watermarks do not appear on finished prints or digital downloads. Any suggestions on how I can have the name of the race or logo appear on finished prints and downloads that I sell through my website?

One way would be to add the text in Photoshop to the image that gets downloaded for print/sale.

Another would be to create a watermark graphic in PS to merge with photos (assuming a batch of photos) to act as masters on the web site so that any download/print is of the master with the watermark embedded.

Thanks, Dngallagher So you think the watermark would print, even though Zenfolio states that prints and downloads do no include watermarks?

If a watermark is part of the image, then it should print.

Not if you're printing through the vendors connected with Zenfolio (back end of the website, if you will), and the watermark was only added as you uploaded to the site.
They specifically print without the watermark displayed on Zenfolio.

Isn't that a Zenfolio added watermark? If you upload an IMAGE that was altered in Photoshop to have text added as a watermak to the image would Zenfolio know to strip out the text from the image?

How would Zenfolio know what was text and what was image?

Yes, you're correct if the maker adds text and/or a watermark in Photoshop before uploading.

But Zenfolio also can add a watermark as images upload, which does NOT get printed, which is what I was responding to (and was what the original poster mentioned it says on the Zenfolio site).

OK, so if I create the watermark in Lightroom 5 it will appear on the print or download? Also, is there a concern about the size and placement of watermarks for different print sizes? In other words, is it possible that some to the text of the watermark will be cutoff in some size prints?

Once you EXPORT the image with the watermark, and the resulting image is what is uploaded.....
The image would then, I assume, have your watermark as exported, plus the Zenfolio watermark displayed, but only your Lightroom added watermark should then be on the download.

Gotcha - by uploading a watermarked image I would then assume both the Zenfolio watermark plus the embedded watermark would show... might get crowded....but on a download, only the embedded watermark should remain with the image.

It appears that the best workflow for me is to embed the watermark from Lightroom 5 before exporting and not use a Zenfolio created watermark.

Since you have someone who WANTS embedded info, yes.

For my purposes, I want the watermark on every image I show online, but my buyers want a "clean" print image - so the Zenfolio watermark works for me.

To answer the question about the watermark getting cut off - I would think if the image gets cropped then it may well crop out part of the watermark, if the image is printed as is without cropping then the watermark should remain.

You might need to experiment with that though to confirm.

Thanks to all for your knowledgable responses. This forum is invaluable to me as a relatively new photographer.
