Due to budget constraints, it will likely be the older 80-400 ED VR... I know it's a bit slow to focus, but how about sharpness @ 400mm ?.... The new Tamron 150-600 is out of my budget, and the Bigma has some issues (according to people I know who had it)..... Any other things I might consider ?.... Budget is $695

At least out to 400mm.... I know most zooms tend to get soft at their long end, at least the 5x or better ones will....

It's a bit out of your range, but I just got the 300mm af-s f/4 and love it. They make an AF-D version in your budget. The primes are sharper than the zooms..

I've got the MF Nikkor 300mm F4.5 EDIF & it meters with both of my bodies, so that would be a duplication.... That's why I was looking at zooms...

Not a zoom, but the Tokina AT-X 400 f/5.6 AF is very sharp, though may be a bit difficult to find.

I would postpone the decision to purchase now, and wait until you can afford at least the Tamron - it will out-perform even the new 80-400 VR from Nikon, at 400mm. Look for reviews, they will all pretty much say the same thing.

Hi Scott. I just sold my old 80-400 and got the new one. I was very happy with the old 80-400. It was pretty sharp after I added sharpness in the camera. But I had to do that with the 28-300 too. I got the new one because it focuses really fast compared to the old one. I am trying to do some birding. The new one scares me when it focuses.:) Pictures are a little better than the older one. But not by much.

I don't know what you mean by "bigma" but have you looked at the Sigma 150-500? They are going for right around your budget used. I have one and its fantastic for the $$$

Hello Erv, Are you referring to the "Set Picture Control" settings for sharpness contrast etc. or " AF Fine Tune" your lens.
My 28-300mm needs a tune-up till I can get my Tamron 150-600mm.
Thanks Craig

Hi Craig. Do the AF Fine Turn in camera. When I got my 28-300 I almost took it back. But doing this made it tack sharp for me.

I've had the 80-400 a while, use it on my d800. To give it a little extra reach I used the Nikon 1.4 teleconverter. Considering that its paid for I'll make do for now.

Hi Erv, I have a Saved Value of 0 for my 28-300mm set to go. Just to get me started what + or - value did you wind up with?

Sigma 100-300 F4 EX with Tamron SP 1.4X - It is a nonextending zoom - zoom with one finger - as sharp or sharper than my Canon L's. Do not buy from anyone except KEH !
