I am in the market for an ultra wide angle lens and I think I've decided on the Canon 10-22 3.5-4.5. I have both a Canon 40D and a Rebel XSi. Thoughts from those who have one?
If money is no object ($649), go for it. Otherwise the new EF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM at $299.00 is a great deal.
And it has IS, which the 10-22 does not. That makes up for the slower apeture, at least for landscapes.
If you are looking for a 10-20mm lens that is well constructed and optically sound, try the Sigma version. It is quite a bit less expensive than the Canon version. I have used mine on Rebel XTi and T2i's with excellent results.

I had one and loved it. I don't have it now as I bought a 5D mk3.

It is only $100.00 more than the 10-18 and more durable. Good suggestion. The price came down from $480, just after I got the Canon 10-18.
I might have gone with Sigma at $399, or maybe not since I am saving for a 7DII.
Is the 40D a crop sensor (APS-C) camera? If yes, the 10-18 mm has gotten very good reviews and several folks on UHH have it. I love mine :)

I've had one for years and have had really good luck with it. I'm going to the park today to take a pano. shot of the fall colors. I'm wanting to take the same shot for each of the four seasons.

I use the Sigma f4 - f5.6 10 - 20mm on my Pentax K 5. It is a remarkable lens. It has yielded 16 x 24 full image prints with excellent sharpness, hand held. I wonder what it would have done on a tripod! I believe the Canon version has IS in the lens, the Pentax, with in body IS, doesn't.

I own the Canon 10-22mm EFS lens and it is a superb lens. I wouldn't be without it.. It is "L" quality glass but can not carry that designation because it is for crop sensor cameras only.. The lack of IS has not been an issue for me.

I have a 10-22, it is my second one because I had sold the first one because I had gone a long time not using it, but I missed it so much that I went ahead and purchased a second one.... It is a great lens, I specs out better than the sigmas, the only other ultrawides I would consider would be the new 10-18 that is supposed to be optically better than the 10-22 and has IS, the Tokina 11-16 f/2.8, or possibly the Sigma 8-16, but I am kinda cold on the 8-16 but I have never used on either.
I recently purchased the Canon 10-18mm. I like it very much.
Before purchasing a wide angle lens for my Canon 60D I borrowed my friend's Sigma lens. I was taking a class and wasn't impressed with my photo quality. My instructor checked it out and said he wasn't a fan of the Sigma lens, that I would be better with the Canon. I got the Canon and then did a shot by shot comparison using it and the Sigma (on tripod, same settings) and the Canon was dramatically better. I see others say the Sigma is great so maybe something was wrong with the lens I borrowed.

I think it's EF-S not ER-S. I have the 10-22 and like it much. I got it used on eBay at a considerable savings. I know it's a risk but . . . .

I have both the 10-22 & 10-18 STM. I like them both. I use the 10-18 exclusively on my SL-1 and the 10-22 on my 7D's. Either one is fine and a good choice. Build quality on 10-22 a little better but so far not an issue. I am just a little more careful with the 10-18.
