You should never clean your sensor in a Canon. The sensor vibrates when you shut down the camera to clean it. If you attempt to clean it yourself you may do damage to the position and the vibrating feature. Canon charges 35-45 to clean, and it is worth it just for the insurance that it has been done correctly.

That's just plain scare-mongering. All my Canon DSLRs have a "Clean Manually" item in one of the Set-up menus that prepares the camera for the operation, including locking up the mirror. The manuals give instructions for the cleaning procedure. Why would Canon give you this capability and the instructions if it was beyond anyone's ability?

If you're afraid to do it yourself, don't. Others can safely perform a cleaning within their level of experience and comfort.

I have had very good experiences with the Sigma repair operation in Duluth, GA.-called Camera Repair Japan. Every lens that I've sent there(non-Sigma, also), has come back quickly, AND focusing more sharply than when sent. I haven't spent more than $200 yet on a repair, with CRJ. and some I wondered about even getting an estimate. I hope your experience is as good as mine-wish I could say the same for Tamron-I've been completely underwhelmed by their service, It may be lightning fast, but both lenses I've sent have come back softer than before they were sent.

Cassy, I dropped my Canon 70-200 f2.8Lii from waist height about two years ago. It landed on the tripod ring and scared me to death. Fortunately it has worked fine ever since. You did not say which lens was dropped. Gary
Hi Gary, I dropped my 24-70 L2.8 lens. It dented the barrel a tad, so when I turn it to zoom it gets tight at a certain point, But it does turn. The AF seems to work still. I am still sending to Canon to make sure things are good. Plus I need to have my camera cleaned.
Thanks

I dropped my XTi, with my 10-22, and the lens broke in two! Canon fixed it as good as new. The camera came though like a champ.
I have never had to clean my sensor. The self cleaning feature was one of the reasons I chose the XTi. I've always changed lenses properly, and maybe thats got something to do with it.

Cassy, sorry to hear about dropping your Lens. I haven't been brave enough to tell anyone that I accidently dropped my Camera and lens (about $800) in lake Superior in Michigan. while kayaking, My paddle was slipping off my lap when taking a picture and the rest of the story goes on. But it didn't take long to buy another one!! This picture was of me crying at a distance.
(lol)
