I currently use a pc to edit photos. I am looking into updating my system. I have been told that both are best from different angles. Any information would be helpful.

You might as well have asked, which is better Nikon or Canon. But you'll get some lively discussion.

PC is cheaper, more flexible with more apps and hardware choices. Mac is more expensive, but some say, more user friendly. It's sorta like the Nikon / Canon argument. Both platforms are awesome so get what suits your personal tastes.

This is sort of like Nikon vs Canon. Comes down to personal preference.

I've been using a Mac since '97 and wouldn't switch to a PC unless I was paid to do so...and even then I would kick and scream. My current set up is a 2.4ghz i7 15" Macbook Pro with 16GB ram and a second monitor attached. I wish it had an SSD drive, but at the time of purchase, two years ago, they were way too expensive (it has a 750GB hard drive). I also have 2 external drives (1TB and 2TB Western Digital).

If you do go down the mac road (and you should) make sure you max the RAM upon purchase.

What other things will you be using this computer for? Are you looking for a desktop or laptop? What program(s) will you be using to edit (I suggest LR).

PC guy here and I prefer a Mac because can run Windows or OSX on it. With windows there all sort of problems that do not exist in OSX.

You'll want a 15"...the 13" displays are too small

I am puzzled by the MacBook & limited RAM that others seem to encounter. Perhaps it's LightRoom?
I have an older MacBook that I used to process all of my photos. I do some focus stacking and routinely upload RAW files from my D7100. I recently processed a 50 file stack of raw files without any issues. What gives? If MacBooks are so limited, why am I not having problems?

(Yikes! Knocks on Polycarbonate.)

;-)

THAT's a big deal. Learning a new platform is no easy task.

I suppose it all depends on what amount of time it takes, if you can deal with the memory swapping slow downs as the data is paged in and out it is no big deal.

Same as for a PC, when you run low on RAM, the system uses hard drive space - vastly more available usually, but slower access.

I run a 16 GB IMAC and my swapping is limited, but at times I still can swap - is it a REAL problem, no, I expect I will jump up to 32 GB soon and eliminate all my swapping, until I do more in PS with stacking I bet ;)

8GB was barely enough for my machine at first, but as my LR library grew, it became way too slow. 16 GB seems to work for me now.

Easier then you think ....my young daughters & wife did it with almost no help. They went from Windows to Linux to OS X (Mac) and had no issues.
