Where can I read more about the "Photosite vs Pixel controversy" ? I'm still trying to learn all I can about the digital photo world.

DP review and it's basically a battle of terms that went badly for the South...

If I'm not mistaken the D700 can shoot in DX mode, so any DX lenses you may have are not completely obsolete.

What happens when you use DX lenses on the D700? Does it automatically mask the image as it records the image? The DX only covers the center of the sensor doesn't it? If there's not much degradation I'm going shopping for a D700.

what happens is you get a vignetted image much like looking through a porthole, because the lens circle only covers the center portion of the sensor. i don't know about "masking"... as far as i know, the camera does not automatically reduce the image size to compensate, though some new ones might be able to sense the lens type and internally "crop" the image to fit.

with the d700 and a 10mm dx lens there was a black border similar to a mask you then have to crop that out of the way.

With the lenses you have (all FX), the decision is a very easy one. The D-700 is an outstanding camera. I have had a D-100 (DX) and D-300 (DX) and now own a D-700 (FX), and am completely sold!!! When other people are putting away their cameras due to low light, I am able to turn up the ISO higher than any of the DX camera's I owned and not have an issue with noise until I get to the extreme. I also like the extra flexibility to crop the photo in post production that the FX format gives and the benefit of a wider field of view (wide angle lenses are truly wide). Since this would be a second camera body, you still get the DX telephoto benefit, so you have the best of both worlds...

Get the D700. You won't be sorry. It will quickly become your "first" camera. : )
