I have this lens in the ED AF-S and it work well for fast moving sports and wild life. War VR is not needed. I is big and heavy but Good IMQ.

I have used the Nikon 70-200 F2.8 for some time for many subjects including sports pictures of my grandchildren. It is fast, autofocus is great and images are great!

I'm a sports shooter

I have both lens the VR and VR (70-200 f2.8) and the non (80-200 F2.8). The VR one is much better BUT at a big price difference.

The non VR will work great on your crop camera turning it into a 160-300 lens. You'll love it

I've got one, bought it second hand a few years ago, paid $500. Best bang for the buck, and I have also used 70-200 F2.8 VR and the VR II - the AF-D is still the best value out there. I've used it for collegiate LaCrosse and Soccer and Rubgy games, the focus is performance is more than adequate with a D300, D700 and D800, but I've never tried it on a D7000.

One of the better lenses out there.. As for fast, you will be amazed at how fast it falls if you drop it.

I have no worries using my 55-300mm...plenty fast enough for any sports I've ever shot...

Do you have an example of some sports subjects you have taken with this lens?

A few hockey ones I took a few years (very dull, overcast day) ago and a couple from a hillclimb a couple of weeks ago...

Nice job; As most photographers find out, you don't need a fast lens to shoot outdoors in bright sunshine. The 55-200 and the 55-300 are both great lenses when you have these conditions. To answer the OP's question, the 80-200 f2.8 is a great lens as well. Most of the time, I don't use the VR anyway, and paid a lot more for my 70-200 f2.8.

A couple of the hockey ones are to suit the pic...portrait, landscape, etc....the two cars aren't...

Another couple of action shots...yes, I know the shutter speed was too high for the plane shot, it would have been better without the frozen props...

I have and use a Nikkor 80~200 ED f/2.8 without AF. I've used that for a number of sporting events, even indoor stuff. It's a great lens and well worth the money I paid for it.
