Suggest you research the Nikon P7800. Two other soon to be released cameras are the Panasonic LX100 and its twin brother the Leica D-Lux Type 109. (I can hear the howls of the Leica-phobes now). The Nikon P7800 is a great camera. Another option is the Fuji mirrorless. Go to kenrockwell.com and read his reviews of Fuji. Fuji is a major contender. They've long made film for the customers, but have not marketed their cameras well. (Their major customers are large corporations, governments and space exploration.) But they have some excellent P&S cameras and now their X-series.

I tried using screen only and HATED it. Unsteady hands, difficult in bright light, unnatural stance.... it just isn't for me. I know some folks love it but I much prefer the viewfinder

I too Hate the screen. EVF is great.

I have a Nikon P7800, virtually new, bought from B&H 6 mo's ago that I am going to sell; haven't been able to get out much at all this summer, so probably haven't shot 100 pics with it. Seems like a very nice camera - research it at B&H among other places. I also have a step-up filter and a set of 3 52mm filters for it - unused. Let me know if interested. NBB

A couple years back I bought a Cannon Power Shot A3000. It fits in my shirt pocket and meets my needs.

I really like the Canon G1X II - read about it here - http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canon-powershot-g1-x-mark-ii/ - not totally compact though. The EVF is optional. Consumer reports rated best camera ! I also like the Sony RX10 though a bit more money .....

I like my Canon G1X (original version) has EVF but is NOT good for macro.

I was waiting for someone to suggest that.

Use snapsort.com to compare features. Also try dpreview for comparisons of different cameras, or just Google one camera vs another. Whatever you get, it will be a good camera. There's no junk out there. Decide what features you want and find a camera that has them.

While I generally hate agreeing with Jerry...he's right... find what you want in a camera and pick one. Make a yes no list of what you want and what you don't need.

The Sony is surely a great camera, but it's really small and it doesn't feel comfortable in my average sized hands. You definitely want to hold this one before buying it. When you do decide what you want, consider buying it from B & H where you have 30 days to decide whether or not you like it.

You might want to take a look at the Leica c-100: quality of image, functionality, and compact size all meet your parameters. It's pricier than most but worth it in MHO. You might be able to buy used at B&H or Adorama.

Reviews say "The Leica C is basically a Panasonic LF1 with a new facelift and design on the outer shell." That one is from SteveHuffPhoto.com, and the author is pretty much always a Leica advocate. I've owned Leica since the days of the two Leica 6 cameras...the 6, 7, 8, 9 and Monochrom. I recently traded all for Sony. I've not been disappointed, in fact, I don't think I'll need to return to Leica.

I use the Rx100 III as my always-with-me camera and find it an outstanding performer. If the Leica C is for you, check out the Panasonic equal, save yourself a bundle. Or go to a camera store and check them all out before plunking down the bucks. I think you'll be impressed by the Sony or the Panasonic, but if the Leica rings your bell, you'll get the output of the Pan with the great Leica looks.

Good luck!

If you want simple the rx100 is great-compact good sensor -color-a fun camera. I have an old s90 canon which is good but not as modern as the Sony rx100-used ist edition 300.00-worth it-check out flkr and see the results. the top compact still-I think.

There are two different cameras, both $900:
1. Panasonic LX100, a "point & shoot" form factor with a 3x zoom
2. Panasonic FZ1000, a "bridge camera" form factor with a 16x zoom

The FZ1000 is available now, the LX100 is expected in November.

The names are undoubtedly designed to be confusing. :-)

Thanks to all of you for prompt responses! Some of these are cameras I have not yet considered, so lots of research left to do.

I'm debating now if I really need an EVF. Do most of you have an easy time with the LCD in bright sunlight? Along that line does the tilting LCD on the RX100 II make that big a difference vs. the fixed one on the RX100?

A big complaint from people with 'pocket cameras' is that they can't see the LCD screen outside in the sunlight. They have little idea of just what they are shooting. A viewfinder is a huge plus!

Thanks for the up date never heard of the LX-100 before I was sure with the $ 900 price tag you were talking about the
FZ-1000 I have the FZ-100 & the FZ-200 both very good
cameras I may sell one & order the FZ-1000 if I keep hearing good reports on it.
