Just read this article that compared an iPhone 6 Plus to a $3,400 Canon EOS 5D Mark III.
Which do you think was the better camera, and in what situation?

There really is no comparison and is silly to make the attempt. The article no doubt was filler material.

One way to help decide is to ask one's self : If both cameras were the same price , which one would be the choice ??

Three pages already! A DSLR will beat out a phone camera "when the going' get tough."

The best camera is the one you have with you at the precise moment you need it. Smart phones and phablets have the chance of becoming "best" do to ubiquitous presence.

The question should be which is better for what purpose? Which is better a Lamborghini or a VW beetle? Better for what? Economy? Beetle. Luxury? Lamborghini. Easy to park? VW. Speed on the Autobahn? Lamborghini. etc, Get it?

The cheapest compact camera is better than any cell phone camera

I would tend to agree with that statement.

I really opened up a can of worms here. I just thought the article was interesting.
By by no means does it represent my thoughts, and my thoughts are that I'd prefer a DSLR over a smart phone camera anyway.

if you want a phone get one if you want a camera get one, I only use my phone for pictures when something unexpected comes up and camera is not with me , i agree phones do take good pictures, but nothing like carrying a camera, guess I am from old school , a good example is I do repairs on rental property for a company out of town , so when I get there I use phone to take a picture of repair and when done take a picture of finished work to send with bill, I don't carry my D3 and leave in hot car or run a chance of being stolen

You have the same issue here. If you don't have a lens for the camera that will utilize the feature you want. $3400 plus assortment of lenses. Yes if all I have is a camera phone take the picture because the opportunity will pass and you can edit it later to make it better.
