Moon ring

This is a very poor hand held shot of the full moon out in Mesa, AZ. The atmospherics were just right to form a moon ring. I believe this is due to ice crystals in the upper atmosphere. We were experiencing SW winds coming up from the Gulf of Mexico laden with moisture from a hurricane coming ashore.

This effect can also happen to the sun. Some call it a "Sun Dog".

If anyone has other information on the cause of the ring, please add your thoughts to this post.

Interesting shot. Did you see the ring through the lens prior to the shot or only after?

You're correct about the cause being ice crystals in the upper atmosphere. I don't know that I've ever heard it referred to as a "sun dog". I was always told it was an indication that it would rain in the very near future.

Yes you don't exactly expect Moon Dog Ice Crystals over Mesa AZ. in a Gulf originated storm. In Santa Maria, CA. we see this in Jan or Feb.

folk-lore says that the number of stars inside the ring will predict the number of days until the next rain.

Nice interesting shot. I believe you are right about the ice crystals in the atmosphere. I've seen the phenomenon a few times.

Hi Kingmapix, here's a Double Sun Dog I thought you might be interested in. Just shot it 5 min ago at the Central Calif Coast.
