This holiday and all it's fanfare and parades are a celebrations for the first idiot guy that got lost and refused to ask for directions. First off, he didn't get to his intended destination of the Far East, and instead got halted in his tracks because the Panama Canal hadn't been conceived by the FRENCH or built by the United States (another project bailout) yet, so he was blocked in his journey. He then claimed 2 whole continents of land and all it's wealth in the name of SPAIN who funded the expedition (but this Holiday celebrates Italian heritage, go figure) and then these Spanish plundering invaders proceeded to spread a Latino Language and various diseases that killed much of the indigenous population of the Americas.

And the Catholic Church should hold some blame for this invasion since it first split world ownership between Spain and Portugal and the church also destroyed and burned all of the historical documents and learned materials of these "NEW American Civilizations" in the hopes of converting them all to Catholicism and the "True Faith". If their books and writing weren't in LATIN, then it must be jibberish. But wait....isn't LATIN also called a DEAD LANGUAGE now too? Is there anyone left alive belonging to the "FLAT EARTH SOCIETY"?

Does this attitude sound a lot like what "ISIS" and the "Muslim Radicals" who are attempting this same type of forceful takeover now in the rest of the world? Maybe these Muslims are just a little slow and maybe 600 years late in their efforts of world domination and beliefs? Geez, the 3 WISE MEN were Persians. What happened to all that wisdom? The Moors brought culture and art and architecture to Spain.

And what about the VIKINGS who settled in Iceland, Greenland and parts of present day New England and eastern Canada? They were in the "New World" almost 300 years before Columbus but there's no fanfare for those explorers and peaceful settlers.

I hardly think the residents of 8th and 9th century Britain would agree with that statement. On their first visit in 793 they ransacked Lindisfarne monestery and butchered the monks. This was the start of their murderous campaign of grabbing as much land and riches as possible.

Actually the Norse (viking is their verb that means to go out raiding, plundering etc. in other words, pirates) never bothered to do much with their find. Didn't tell too many people. And then during the Little Ice Age their colonies died off and they abandoned the whole deal. Their sea going technology was good enough to get here every so often but not on a regular basis. Between that, low population, lack of funds, and wars both internal and external back home they never really did anything with their discovery. Then they more or less forgot about it.

Columbus (who was Italian) working for the only government that would invest in his idea found two whole continents blocking his way to Asia. Good luck for him, his ships weren't big enough to carry enough supplies to get all the way to Asia. He didn't know that, he had believed the wrong guy who calculated the size of the world. The other one got it right, his guy got it only half size. And at just that time navigation, ship design etc. produced the ability to exploit the discovery.

Doddy,

Just because one band of Norseman came plundering, you then characterize all Norsemen as plunderers and thieves? Isn't that a bit racist?

The colonies made in the new world by Norsemen were with families and communal living that just were unsustainable through the "Little Ice Age" and they slowly dwindled in numbers. But the dwellings are still found to this day and proofs have been discovered linking these outposts to Norsemen through pins, buttons, RUNES and structures.

I still say that COLUMBUS DAY celebrates the first crazy Italian to refuse to ask directions, lied to his crew about position, found outside financial backing (the original Ponzi scheme) and then wrongly named the place to cover his ass until they finally generated slaves and plundered the 2 continents. Those Spanish were better at "going a VIKING" than the Norse were.

There are many theories but no definitive proof as to where Columbus was from nor for that matter, even where he is buried.

Unfortunately it wasn't just one band of Norsemen...as I said Britain was attacked over two centuries, the last viking invasion was defeated by king Harold in 1066 just before he lost out to the Norman king William the conqueror.

I understand your point, but just like Indians in the New World, a few bad apples are in every barrel. And since those Vikings were defeated, British teeth and the gene pool have been degrading ever since. Kidding. But the Roman occupation of England didn't really help since they built Hadrian's Wall to keep out native influence.

No problem with any of this except the very last sentence. The Vikings were many things but they were not peaceful. They raped and plundered most of England and northern europe.

Give examples of such rape and plunder in North or South America? As a matter of fact, the Icelandic tribes are recorded as the first demonstration of a Democratic form of government in the New World.

I love when people whine about Columbus, as if it really matters.

What I know is that I can pick up Levi's at a Columbus Day sale and, dammit, that works for me...

All you have to do is Google--violent viking history-- you will then find that "democratic peaceful vikings" is revisionist history

You should go to Iceland. The only violent behavior there was inter-clan feuding and the beheading of Catholic Priests who impregnated their woman and not just once, but numerous times.
Iceland was the first Democracy in the western world. Check it out.

Doddy,

Hope we aren't forgetting how the English plundered the Scots for about 300 years. Of course many Scots are descendants of the Norse who landed there after fleeing war in their homeland.

No people are without blood on their hands. Humans are a self-serving and violent species. The way we Americans decimated indigenous tribes on this continent is incredibly shameful. And the sins of slavery here are damning.

The tapestry of human exploration, discovery and colonization is fascinating and it's what makes history so interesting. It does little good, however, to analyze the actions of past peoples using the morality and human values of today.

As both a student and former teacher of history, the common thread I see in that tapestry is how religion has motivated humans to slaughter and subjugate each other. That must really anger God.
