When I was looking for my 50mm 1.8 (Canon) it took 3 months for my local camera shop to get it in stock, the nifty-fifies are always in high demand, because of the price point (especially for Canon since are priced at $100).

I'm actually thinking of selling mine and moving up to the 50 1.4.
You can if you want but I'm saying "you'll be sorry" The 1.4 is much more expensive and really you won't notice that much difference other than you have to watch for unwanted bokeh. I have the 1.4 and would go with the 1.8 if I had it to do over again, very little difference except for DOF factor that is a pain until you get used to it. If $$$ are not an issue than go for it and let me know what you see as the major difference---I know your eyes are better than mine.....

I think the quality of the bokeh is nicer on the 1.4 (8 diaphragm blades compared to the 5 blades of the 1.8) resulting a softer feel to the bokeh.

Now I hear from some friends that huge price difference between the 1.4 and the 1.2 isn't really worth the upgrade but ohhh to shot wide open at 1.2 would be dreamy!

try keh.com they sell new nikon as well as used. if you are willing to buy used you can save some cash. keh is very conservative in their ratings and everything i bought from them has come in much better shape then described., plus has a free 6 month warranty on used.
