Hooray! I finally purchased my D7100 and I am thrilled! I am looking for input on what Pelican case I should get. This kind of investment needs a grade A protective carrying case that can hold the camera, spare battery & telephoto lens. Suggestions?

This is what I got;

I use a "Pelican U160 Urban Elite Half Case Camera Pack". It holds my D7100, five lenses (a 55-300mm attached) batteries, cards, a tripod externally. It is waterproof! (they say, although I really don't want to find out the hard way) and crush resistant. Very glad I got this thing. It seems bombproof!

I decided on the iM2600 Storm Case with pull apart foam as it meets airline carryon requirements. $150.00 at B&H

Suggestions? Yes. You don't need a case. You just bought the finest APS-C made and you want to pack it away? Go out and use it!

I fly regularly and carry enough gear that a soft bag isn't practical. The Pelican case lets me get it all in 1 case & still carry it on. At home, the case stays open and half the gear is in use.

Geesus. Must be really easy to access the camera for quick shots.

It wasn't purchased for quick access. Temp storage and travel is the purpose. It is OK to use as a carry-on for US air travel. With the wheels it is easy to run through the airline terminals along with my laptop.

Is it deep enough to accommodate a Canon 100-400 L lens and the Tamron 150-600?

I see your point. On my last flight, I took a soft sided bag and made sure it was within the allowed dimensions for carry-on. The first leg of the flight was a small jet (I think Airbus). Our carry-ons turned into what they called "carry-out". We were relieved of bags at planeside and they were stuffed into the cargo hold and twice handled by the baggage guys. :roll:

I carry the Nikon D7100 (or D300s) with a 18-300mm telephoto, a 150-600 Tamron, a Tokina 12-24mm, a 50mm, 2x tele-extender, the MD-B15 (or MD-B10), my filter pouch, meter, Lightning Bug, remote shutter release and various accessories. Space for my release forms and a 17" laptop should I want to travel with that. Excellent for air travel.

Not saying the Pelican isn't good, it is, but I got two gun cases from a local fleet farm store that easily hold a D7000 with an 80-200 2.8 attached and a 2nd D7000 with a medium size lens like an 18-200 with room for other stuff. They cost under $20 each. I use the 2nd one for extra lenses, flash and light meter.

I'm sure they are NOT water proof and NOT as sturdy as the Pelican but they're are good enough for me.

I think this is it on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Plano-Protector-Four-Pistol-Case/dp/B000P3WPKK
