There is a book called Nikon 7100 for Dummies that is very well laid out.

One thing no one has mentioned, that I discovered by accident, is that the info button, when pressed while in a menu item, will often give you additional information about what that item selection means.

It's the button with the question mark, just below the menu button.

I find it very helpful, at times. I think you'll love your new camera, once you learn how to get it set up to work the way you want it to. :)

Can anyone help me out. I just purchased the D7100 with a 18-140 lens along with a 55-300 lens. I thoroughly enjoy the camera and pic quality but I cannot understand the way the owners manual is laid out regarding all the camera functions. It is very confusing and is starting to force me to use Auto, Scenes and Effects more than I want. I even went back to the camera store where I purchased it and they would not give me the time of day and only referred me to a couple of Nikon publications
I would like to use ISO and aperture first and then progress but this may not be the best way
I don't know of anyone else with a 7100 other than each of you so any and all suggestions and recommendations are appreciated.

I have often faced the same "user manual" problem and have wondered who wrote the manual. Many years ago I had a manual that was very, very poorly written, then a friend explained that is was a transliteration from the Japanese manual - that erased the mystery. Is the manual written by a seasoned photographer or an English Major or a harried sales rep. One of my gripes about the camera button maps is the names of them - they are not always self-evident. Another gripe is the use of jargon in the descriptive sections. One of my gauges of qualty description is whether the instruction sticks in mind - you know the instruction that spurs "yeah, that makes sense." End of rant.

Go to Amazon and get the book called NIKON D 7100 FOR DUMMIES....it is a Wiley Brand book.

Yes, it is a big sucker but it it written in plain English and easy to read and follow. The manual that Nikon supplies is good IF you are a technical person and most of us ARE NOT.

Go to Michael Andrews website:
Michaelthemaven.com and he has a great video tutorial for download and DVD on the nikon 7100. I ordered the crash course for my cNon 7d and it covered all the functions of the camera and more. Crash course is around 40.00 and worth every penny. Also you might purchase David Bush's guide on the nikon d7100 from amazon for 19.99 another great source. Good luck!

Don't give up if at first you don't succeed ! Look for YouTube videos that address the subject and return to reading the camera's manual by slowly reading and carefully reading each chapter one at a time.. If you fail to understand a chapter, stop there, go back, and read it again..

I take it this is your first DSLR camera. You apparently need to gain some education in basic photography, I suggest buying the book "Understanding Exposure" by Brian Peterson, you will find it an invaluable resource guide.
The factory owners manuals are never designed to teach you photographic skills, their entire purpose is to show you how the functions of that particular camera are accessed so you can learn where all the controls are at and how to adjust them for your purposes.
Good luck.

ABSOLUTELY AGREE! Knowing what all the camera controls do, (and THIS is all the camera manual is designed to do), will not help you understand the physics of photography. Once you understand the action of light, what lenses do, how they work, what your camera sensor is doing, and the function and effect of aperture, angle of view, shutter and shutter speed, THEN (and only then) all the camera controls and how to use them become clear.

How much do you know about the basic settings, such as ISO, shutter speed and aperture? Maybe someone can recite the "Rules of Thumbs" for you.

I appreciate all the input I have received. Thank you
In addition I have been in photography for a number of years and have had a number of 35mm cameras along with a D 6006. This is my first DSLR and the manual is what is screwing me up and getting me discouraged.
I hope to get more input from each of you and appreciate every bit of it
I am beginning to follow up on a number of the items mentioned

Type "Nikon D7100" into Google, and you will find the DPreview webpage. They have exceptional information on the D7100, including what amounts to a complete manual on the camera operations and controls. It is a bit tedious to load one page in at a time, and then download and print it, but it is free, very accurate and very useful. I just bought a D7100 myself, and am using DPreview as my owners manual. Great camera. Good luck

If you have been successfully using the controls of other slr's and understand the role of ISO, aperture, and shutter, depth of focus and angle of view, then I don't understand what is confusing about the DSLR. The only difference being that the sensor is not silver emulsion but electronic sensors transcribing onto a memory chip. Just take the camera put it on manual, then on aperture priority, then shutter priority and start shooting with it while manipulating the variables one at a time. What is probably getting to you is all the information, and how to read it all at once. Stop trying to make sense of it, and just shoot pictures, review the results and make mental notes of what you did that worked. Do it methodically - give the camera a workout. Sit on your back porch and shoot the same thing a thousand times if you have to until you understand what the setting changes are doing. It gets to be something like muscle memory, - suddenly it makes sense.

I have the D7100, too, and love it. I agree that the owner's manual is not very clear. However, Darrell Young's "Mastering the Nikon D7100" is an excellent reference book. He carefully explain all aspects of the camera in a logical way. Very understandable and easy to read. I purchased mine on Amazon.com. Good luck w/your new Nikon!

I found the DVD camera manual that came with the DSLR much more complete and easier to comprehend for the D5100.
