I locked myself in a room and didn't come out until I figured it out. The develop module was not the issue - but the catalog threw me a curve. Once I let go of trying to manage files in the OS folder system AND Lightroom, it all made sense. Once you start using Lightroom you are best served if you use it to do all file management. The other "stuff" is similar enough to other editing programs and fairly easy to learn.

I can NOT figure out where Lightroom is putting all the Imports and Exports???

I found that managing the files in the old fashioned way (Windows folders and subfolders) was easiest. Then in the Catalog module I use synchronize to make the catalog match the file structure. This may be sub-optimal but it works for me.

I hate to swim against the current here, but I have a different approach. Ever since my very first computer ( A Timex Sinclair) I have decided what I wanted the machine/software to do for me and spent some time making it do that thing. I wanted Photoshop Elements to do editing and cataloging. I wanted Lightroom to do much the same. It is unusual for me to do much with layers as I do very little cut and paste. Most of my photos just need a few Image Quality tweaks. The point is I have spent more time struggling with things I wanted to do and couldn't, but a lot less time learning things I'll never use.

I like finding out what I didn't know I could do as well as the things I want to.

I have done several courses, including those on KelbyOne (both videos and Kelby's book), Adobe (Julianne Kost and Terry White), Phil Steele plus several other tutorials. However, I found that Laura Shoe's video course (available on Amazon) is by far the best; I would rate her course a 9.5/10 versus no better than 6/10 for any (or all) the others I mentioned. I first learned about her course on another Ugly Hedgehog thread a few months ago.
She has a web site where you can order her videos, but I think Amazon sells them cheaper.

I also use Phil Steele, he is easy to understand and I can access the videos at any time I choose. It's also inexpensive. You can also ask him questions at any time and he will reply.

I couldn't understand anything of Adobe's tutorials, they were too complex and hard to view.

Hi,
When I first started using Lightroom, I relied on the wealth of information available on the web such as the Adobe tutorials, Youtube and many of the links suggested here on the UHH. I learned enough to get started but quickly felt like I was trying to take a sip of water out of a fire hose in learning more. I'd appreciate hearing from those of you who use Lightroom 5 who can offer a systematic approach to learning Lightroom. I feel that I am only using a small percentage of its capabilities but really don't know how to build on what I am currently using. Thanks in advance for your assistance.
Sincerely,
Lee

If you want to learn everything, then you need a complete step by step reference. Although many swear by it, Scott Kelby's book does not cover everything. For me the reference is The Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 5 Book by Martin Evening from Adobe Press. It covers every feature of Lightroom in a logical order and each section builds on the previous one. If you want to learn everything then you have to be prepared to invest some time. While there are many great tutorials and videos which are also important resources, they are incomplete and not integrated to give you a soup to nuts approach. If you want to know everything get the Lightroom 5 book, start on page 1 and read it to the end. The pages you don't read is the stuff you'll won't learn.
