I bought a used one from Adorama got an OEM model, it is in excellent/new condition and I saved $145 from new price. Love the extra battery time and the dual controls make it really easy to use!

I hadn't considered used. I may check that option also. Thanks.

Hi. A grip is an excellent tool if you plan to shoot more than just a couple of pictures. I had one with my D5000 and used it on many different occasions. When I decided I wanted a better, more versitile camera and got my D7000, ther grip was one my first additional purchases. Besides adding more battery (NiMH or AA so you can choose), it also provides "goodies" such as a vertical shutter release, a s solid handle to safely holding your camera.
Yes it does add weight but the advantages outweigh (no pun intended) the downside

I'm definitely going to get a battery grip, and would probably want the OEM because of the construction more than function. Now just have to make my decision. Thanks again for all the helpful advice. You guys are great! I can always count on help here.

I must admit I have 2 of them for my Canon bodies and rarely use them. Just makes everything too bulky. When I put my 70-200mm L and the grip on my 7D it weighs a ton. I'd be glad to sell you mine.

I'd probably buy one if I was a Canon guy. :) I don't know that I would use it all the time, but there have been times in the past that I wish I'd had one. Both for extended battery life and ergonomics.

I have an after market grip for my Canon and would echo all the positive things already said – I love it for all the reasons stated and would not be without it.

However, if you should ever undertake any firmware updates on the camera like as not the camera will cease to recognise the grip any more and it will have all the characteristics of a chocolate teapot. Sadly, that seems to go for most after market devices following a firmware update.

My apologies if this has already been said and I've missed it in the 5 pages of this thread.

On my 7D I upgraded the firmware with no problem I even installed Magic lantern no Problem. The same with my 5DmII. HUmmmmm

When I went to the B&H in NYC, they had both a Nikon branded grip for my D700 and their own label grip to compare. Both were about the same weight, both could take an additional niMH battery or AAs, and both had the same features. The only discernible difference I could see was the price (3x more for the Nikon).
When I then asked the salesman why the $ difference, he smiled and pointed to the Nikon logo. He then showed me both were made in China and when I then asked if they come from the same factory, he shrugged. BTW the guarantee was the same.
Things like grips are like lens covers and eye cups. Nikon makes cameras and lenses. Everything else they put out to bid. Don't think Canon, Sony, Panasonic are any different

Hello all. I have been considering purchasing a battery grip for my D7100. I was wondering how others like using one. Also, would you go with Nikon or third party brands?
Thanks in advance.

I have a Canon 50D and purchased a Vello Vertrical grip and have had no problems. Adds a little weight to the camera, but makes it easier shooting vertical. Have no idea what a 3RD party grip will do for a Nikon, but give it a try.

I use battery grips on my two Pentax DSLRs - K5 and K3, and I use Pentax battery grips. I think it best to go with the same brand regardless of what brand you're using.

 I have a 7100 and about a year ago I purchased a XIT-XTNG7100 Grip from Amazon for $35.99. I couldn't see spending 12 times as much for the Nikon grip. I've used it on a regular basis since I purchased it and it works and fits the 7100 GREAT.

I bought a Canon grip/battery holder for my 70D .....

I sold it after a few months, didn't like the added weight.

I have extra batts, always one in my pocket if I'm shooting something important.

If you ever plan on buying an "L" bracket from the major manufacturers like Kirk or RRS, a non OEM battery grip could produce an improper fit because the brackets are produced to fit the OEM battery grip. This may not apply in all cases just remember "Buyer Beware".

I got a 3rd party one for my d7000 and love it. I'm shooting football right now with a 3.5# lens it comes in handy for handling and the portrait position needed for the sports shots. Do wish I would have gotten the Nikon one. Even though the $35 one I got works fine and looks like it is part of the Nikon camera.
