Happy to hear you will be visiting our beautiful Lowcountry. You will be arriving at a great time .... right in the middle of the Fall bird migration. One place in particular that I would recommend is a visit to Fish Haul Creek at low tide. You will find many shorebirds there along with songbirds in the wooded areas. FHC is located at the north end of the road to the airport (Beach City Road) and is on the upper heel of the HHI map (HHI looks like a shoe). Another place would be the Pinckney Wildlife Refuge which is the first right turn after taking the bridge back to the mainland. Ibis Pond at PWR always has an array of Egrets, Herons and Ibis and ... alligators. If you still have time and wish to explore places off HHI, I would recommend a visit to Savannah Wildlife Refuge. This is a wintering home for many species of waterfowl and other migrating birds. Check out the websites for the above places. They include maps and trails. Happily, South Carolina has had the foresight to preserve most of its marsh/river coast to insure a good wildlife/birding experience.

Just as you get on Hilton Head on 278, about 1/4 mile from the end of the bridge, you want to turn right on Chamberlin Drive and then turn immediately into what looks like an abandon parking lot on the right. Go to the end of the parking lot and set up looking over the creek. This is a great evening shot, especially if you have some "interesting" weather. It's a great place in the summer with the afternoon thunderstorms. If nothing else, you can get a great sunset there.

My wife and I will be in Hilton Head, SC from 5 October to 11 October and would be interested in getting any recommendations of locations to shoot, not just in HH but up and down the coast as well. I'd appreciate any thoughts about locations for wildlife, beach, landscape and night photography. Of course great places to eat could be noted as well! When I return I promise to show some of my shots. Many thanks to all.

Google Old Sheldon Ruins. Also Michellville beach - some Lonesome trees to the left of the entrance to the beach - late in the daylight. Also go down Spanish Wells Road from Rt 278 about a 1/2 mile and shoot the dock on the right.

Many thanks for the info. I shot in Savannah last year and probably will go back to the Savannah National Wildlife Refuge again. I'll be sure to try the Boat House.

DLM - thanks for the great info, which I'll certainly put to use. I've shot the Savannah Refuge before and will probably spend some time there as well. Looking forward to a part of SC that I haven't visited before.

Jim S - thanks. I'll certainly give the dock a look at and see what I can do with it.

Stay to the left and keep the stream as the leading line. Not what Ben Ham did shooting over the grass. Mid day high tide is best with some big clouds and a polarizer.

I live on HHI. I would be delighted to give you a tour if you have the time. We live in Sea Pines plantation. The least I can do is call you in a free pass to our plantation. There are loads of photo ops. Birds, flowers, historical sights, where to capture sun rise, sun sets, gators, Atlantic ocean, beach scenes etc. Pick a day or two and I'll do my best to accommodate your schedule. Email to rich@rwdaley.com would be the best way to communicate.

Rich - What a kind gesture. I'll get in touch as timing firms up. Thank you.

There is also a REAL lighthouse at Hunting Island State Park outside of Beaufort SC. You might also see some dolphins. The main river through Hilton Head has some manatees right now. Savannah Wildlife Refuge is quiet now, but check it out anyway -- free!

Thanks -- will be in Beaufort so I'll check out this lighthouse, too.
