If the item is darker in color would you use a lighter color for a background like this
Oh yes!!! that is gorgeous!!!! maybe crop to portrait???

You want contrast. Dark/light, or color, or some combination. If you use color, it should be complementary, not clashing. This one works, and the suggestion to crop is good.

Gimp can do all kinds of stuff. It's not quite Photoshop, but it's pwerful software. You will have to check out the tutorials on the Internet to get a handle on it. There's probably a "Gimp for Dummies" book kicking around. Long story short, it will definitely let you do what you need to do with these images.

Haven't heard of that one. I was going to learn how to use Gimp so I could make pattern from pictures of couples for their anniversary. I'll see if I can download picasa and give it a try.Thanks. Hope I'm not bothering you to much. You've been great help. Along with the others. Frenchie

I take it you are/were a professional woodworker. If you're a novice with digital photography, I'd say that Gimp is jumping in with both feet. It's very powerful, but it's heavy-duty software. There are other free programs, such as Picasa, which someone else mentioned, that don't do as much, but have an easier learning curve. You can move up in terms of complexity - and cost - as you outgrow the easy stuff. Do some searching here on UHH, there's plenty of discussion.

I checked out picasa and started to down load it and it came up as Gimp

Check the directions. You may have downloaded an installer, and not actually installed the software. Also, if you double-clicked a photo file, your system (Windows, I'm assuming) may be opening Gimp as the default image editor.
