Those who might have the Canon 1d mark3 and 7d, is the 1d better in low light shooting higher ISO with less noise? Any other pros or cons?

Found a 1d mark3 for $800. Serial number 553XXX with blue dot on box. Do not know shutter count yet. I am trying to figure if there is enough difference to be worth it.

According to a review I read, the 1D is supposed to shoot better in low light.

This camera body only is listed on B&H for $6799.00. If you have found one for only $800.00 I would be very suspicious!!!!

The new 1D X is $6799.
The 1D MK III that is being discussed here is 6-7 years old and used ones can routinely be found in the $800 price range.

What are you using now, and what types of stuff do you mostly shoot?

7d. have done some sports stuff for our kids HS, now grandkids coming and family gatherings. Sometimes an employee's guitar) band venue. No money stuff. I have not worked out the noise levels very well with my 7d and lose a lot on out of focus.

I use a 7D every day for wildlife action (see my blog) and although I agree about it being rather noisy at high, and even not so high ISO, you shouldn't have any problems with focusing on moving subjects. That camera was designed for subjects like sports and other action.
Are you using AI Servo focusing mode for action and keeping your shutter speed up?

Yes, AI Servo, but maybe I have been trying to keep ISA too low and not getting fast enough shutter.

I have a 1D Mark III and love it. Fast focus, and I love the 10 FPS for drag racing and volleyball that my kids participate in a lot. Long battery life and convenient controls. And built like a tank . I just added a 600RT Speedlight over the weekend. Need a few more good lenses and might add a second full frame body someday. The Mark III only uses EF lenses though. No EF-S.

I follow South African photographer Isak Pretorious on FB.He won an award from the British Wildlife Assoc last year. He lists his hardware and settings with every photo he posts.
When I contacted him re which camera he liked to use the most this was his gracious reply :
"The best value for money at the moment is picking up a good second hand Canon 1D Mark III. They go for about US$ 600 and is still a fantastic camera with super autofocus and 10 frames per second."
He also stated that the 1dx was what he liked best, but on his FB postings I have counted no fewer than 10 different cameras that he's used and it's interesting to compare the pictures from each.

This is a young man who can, and does, use all the best canon and Nikon has to offer. Hope this info helps you to make a decision.

I have a 1D Mk III and love it. I just had to replace the shutter at over half a million actuations. Cost was around $300 from Canon. I've shot in the rain, dropped it in concrete, shot in 100 oF+ heat and a snowstorm. It just keeps shooting.

I've used a friend's 7D and the only benefit it has over the Mk III is weight.

If you rely on an LCD to make your settings then do NOT get the 1D. The 1D is intended to be used almost by feel. It takes a little time getting used to but once you do you won't ever want to go back to the "old way" of looking at an LCD to make your settings.

I've had the 1dMKIII for a couple of years now and it's been a great workhorse, it does start getting noisy in Low lighting, but very acceptable, the high shutter speed is great and the battery life is incredible. My primary is a 5dMkIII now, but I still lean heavily on my 1d. These we're shot on a very overcast day

I started saving my pennies when I first heard about the MkIII, but ended up waiting for the Mk IV. My wait was worth it. They are still available used, but at a lot more $$ than you're mentioning. I started out hating it, but when it was stolen, I replaced it.

However, I've found a lot of differences between the 2 cameras that were the same model, but different manufacture dates. The original camera performed very well in low light. The replacement camera (which was manufactured earlier) not so good.

I'd check the manufacture date of the Mk III to see if it was at the beginning of production or end of production. They learn stuff and correct stuff as the camera gets used.
