Need help identifying this insect. I'm not sure if it is a bee or a fly.

Either a bumble bee or a carpenter bee.
Looks like one of the Bumble Bees. Since you are 'in hiding' I can't be sure if this will help or not but here is a link. This is for bees of the US. Scroll to the bottom of this page and there are links to Eastern and Western US Bees that is very good.

cane, this is a fantastic image of a bee tack sharp,very detailed. :thumbup: :thumbup: :thumbup: :thumbup: is that olympus camera you are using a pt and shoot. How far were you from the bee when taking the shot?
It was a waterproof point and shoot. I shot in macro mode at a distance of 6"or less. Picture taken on the great plains in Montana.
