It is difficult when the background or other surroundings are "busy." Moving to a position that helps eliminate distractions from the main subject can be done sometimes (usually not!). Opening to a widest f/stop that will still leave the main subject sharp is also sometimes possible -- photo #1 has good separation because of that. Sometimes flash fill can help -- might need a booster device like Better Beamer for distance reach. Probably a lot of good suggestions better than mine at other web pages.
