My comment was poorly worded. Upon opening up the brand new, raw CF card, I formatted it BEFORE shooting test shots. Then I tried to export in to LR5 and could get no reading.

Hmmmmm!

Yet Another "problem" with Lightroom....

I bought it and have a damn time understanding it...

So Until I study more about the usage of LR (and I have a lot of DLed tutorials) - I will continue to Up-Load to my computer from my card reader (a "G.E." from (of all places) Walgreens) with the "Windows Explorer" (OP= WIN - 7)...

I make a separate folder under New Photos and a date - then after the DL = I open with "Bridge" and using the RAW I bring them into CS-5 and do my Post-Edits.

I do hope that Each Card you have is Formatted With the camera that you are making use of? ((i.e.= as with me I have a Canon 7D and a Canon 5D Mark II ---> each have their own cards and I do not "cross-breed". )) AND NEVER In The Computer.....

Card was unwrapped, inserted in Nikon D300 for formatting, then test shots taken before inserting in reader for export into LR5 through Mac Pro where I got absolutely no response or notification...nothing. This has been the same process I've successfully followed using ALL my other CF cards, the only difference was that this Kingston card is my first card at 16GB which could have a bearing on my entire problem.

My procedure has always been to use my high speed card reader to transfer all my RAW files into a suitable folder on my 2TB hard drive, then use Adobe Bridge to view them, select and edit them in ACR, then PS. Bridge has no problem with 2TB. I do not have or need LR, but I can't imagine that LR cannot read large storage devices the same as Bridge.

If this is the first use of the card, perhaps it's a bad one? Or if you are using a newer camera than the LR RAW list can read, you may have a problem there. But it should give you a warning. Did you try updating RAW definitions for LR? If all else fails, you can use the Nikon software or the Adobe DNG (free) program to convert to a TIF.

No, no it isn't. A "Kingston Ultimate 600X 16GB Compact Flash Card (CF/16GB-U3)" is not SDHC.

It could be beyond the capability of the card reader. Sounds strange I know old DVD player i had with sd and cf slots couldn't read bigger than 128mb in the sd slot (but could read the same card if in a cf slot adapter. I've got a desktop system with a 3.5inch bay card reader, useless with modern card capacities yet with a cheap usb card adapter the same card reads fine. Maybe its time to buy a new card reader. If you can try before you buy even better.

just googled your problem and found an odd solution but no harm in trying the poster had a similar issue with a 16 gb card, short version tried a 4gb card it worked ejected that and inserted the 16gb card and it read fine. No harm in trying it.

Inserting then removing different CF cards could accidentally knock some crud off the device's contacts. Somebody above already described a more effective approach to cleaning the reader's pins.

"Hallelujah. Ok random fix, but I'll pass it on. Tried 3 diff readers, several different cords, one MacBook Pro, one iMac and one Toshiba PC and NO GO. But....
Tried a smaller 4GB CF card in one of my original readers to see if that would be read and it was. So, immediately re-inserted problematic 16GB for the umpteenth time and VOILA it worked. Maybe because the iMac had just been communicating with the reader for the 4GB? Not sure, but so grateful for all of your input and for a solution. After backing up the images I'm chucking that cursed card! Technology--can't live with it; can't live without it.
Have a great weekend fellow photogs."
