Just purchased brand new, raw-non-formatted Kingston Ultimate 600X 16GB Compact Flash Card (CF/16GB-U3). Immediately formatted card on my Nikon D300, took four test shots with no problem. Upon inserting card into both of my flash card readers, no reading came up through Apple MacBook Pro to Lightroom 5.

I know both my readers work in that I have used them to export photos from SanDisk, Sony and Lexar Pro cards in the past.

Any suggestions, Hogs????

I wonder if your compact flash card reader can't read the "Ultimate 600x" card. Maybe you could try connecting your camera to your computer directly using a USB Cable and see if you can download the images from the card that way.

I've ended up doing that, and it was a successful download, but I like the convenience of taking out used card, putting in reader, loading up fresh CF card in camera and continuing to shoot. Can't figure out why neither of my current readers won't recognize the Kingston, but are fine with other three major CF manufacturers. Supposedly they're universal readers. Just thought maybe it was an adjustment I needed to make.

Thanks for your comeback.

With the CF card in the card reader, can you copy the folder on the card to your hard drive using the operating system? Either result would help isolate the issue.

Strange. Since cameras are limited in what cards they can use, maybe that applies to card readers, too.

It is probably the card reader. Are the other cards 16GB? With SD cards the size(SD, SDHC, SDXC) has been an issue with readers. The U3 rating should not be the issue but maybew

Lexar has a "Pro" model that is higher speed. Should read anything that fits in the slot.

I also use a Nikon D300.
I have an internal card reader which started not wanting to read my Sandisk 16GB 400x. It seemed to read my Sandisk 4GB 200x. I bought another Kingston 4GB 266x and right from the package it did not want to read it. The electronics repair tech at work gave me a bottle of DeoIT D100L with a needle applicator and told me to put a very small about across the end of one of my compact flash cards then insert and remove the card in the reader about 50 times. IT WORKED! Now the read reads anything perfectly. Turned out to be dirt and standard corrosion on the reader pins. Also, DeoxIT WILL NOT harm plastic. Works on ANY metal which conducts electricity. The repair tech uses it on everything he repairs from stereos to cameras. This stuff works but is expensive. A 25ml bottle is $23 ~ $32 depending on where you get it.

I don't understand or I missed something, if you formatted the card, than there should be no "reading coming through", as the card is empty?

Do your other cards work with your reader? If you just started using the latest Mac OS, the reader may not work with Mavericks.

Card readers are designed to read various types of card at a point in time. Eventually technology moves on, and new capabilities for cards get implemented. Eventually something changes that goes beyond the design capabilities of the reader. It doesn't mean that anything is necessarily wrong with either device, just that the reader may not handle a new format.

Probably time to do some research and get a new reader that covers all the latest card types that you think you may use in the foreseeable future.

Google and Amazon are both good research tools to identify the latest speeds, formats, capacities etc. and compatible readers.

Good luck.

Mr. T....you may have hit the problem head-on with your observation about the 16G. Other cards have been tops of 8G.
Am still pursuing, but your observation seems quite relevant.

My comment was poorly worded. Upon opening up the brand new, raw CF card, I formatted it BEFORE shooting test shots. Then I tried to export in to LR5 and could get no reading.

I assume you formatted the card in the camera? I think you're asking for trouble if you formatted it in an Apple, as the default file structure is PC-based, although the Apple should be able to read it. If you have a PC available running Windows, see if it can be read in that machine.
