Leaving in less than a week for Oahu and Maui, and have a tour planned for Oahu, but need some help for Maui. I really not sure I want to drive on the road to Hana so do you have suggestions? Also I want to travel camera equipment light and you can see my two cameras and lenses in my post at the bottom. This D610 is getting the best of me as far as weight goes, love it for events but it is getting heavier everyday.

Make sure you plan a trip up the volcano, Haleakalā. It is an incredible adventure. Sunrise or sunset is great but a trip up there during the day is still awe inspiring. You should have both a wide angle and telephoto for the best shots. Also, the coast north of Lahaina is easy to get to and takes less time than the Hanna road and is almost as scenic. .

We were in Maui over the holidays leaving in January and just spent a week in Oahu earlier this month. Not sure what you are interested in but there are all kinds of things to shoot on both islands.

In Maui, the road to Hana is an experience and should be done at least once. Just past Hana is the grave site of Charles Lindbergh and the lower side of Haleakela National Park. The drive up to Haleakela takes you to 10,000 feet, bring something warm. Sunrise is absolutely stunning from there as well.

There will be no whales in Maui this time of year, but the Iao Valley Needle is a nice hike and photographic as well. Lahaina harbor is fun too with different things to do as well.

Oahu is very dense in the Honolulu area, but totally the opposite on other sides of the island. Pearl Harbor, Iolani Palace, the Punch Bowl National Cemetery of the Pacific and North Shore are all fun places too. You will have fun I'm sure.

If you have any other specific questions, feel free to PM me. I do have some Hawaii posts under my user name as well.

Chris

I found the newsletter "Hana Coast" from www.photographamerica.com to be very helpful when we were in Maui earlier this year. It's $8.00 for the download version and quite detailed in its description of photo spots and locations. The Haleakala volcano is definitely worth the trip. I did it to coincide with sunset and got some really interesting shots. Have a wonderful trip and take lots of pictures. Maui sunsets are wonderful.

First in Oahu if time climb Diamond Head. In Maui drive to the top of Haliakala (10,000 ft) before sunrise and watch the sun come up. Bring blanket temp is about 37 degrees. Also drive to Hana on the other side. Many water falls to see. Can drive to the 7 waterfalls area. Charles Limburg is buried near by, but you need good directions to find it. David

I didn't see it mentioned yet, but on Oahu, the Polynesian Cultural Center is a great place to go. It's like the Epcot Center for all the Polynesian islands. If you spend the day, you can finish with a luau and a great show. Well worth it.

We did a helicopter tour on Maui that covered a nice portion of the island. We saw lot of fantastic sights. So if you want to avoid driving a fair amount of it, you may find that a great alternative.

If you have time on Maui, a day trip out to Molokini is a great exper[ence even if you don't have underwater gear. Not so much a photo op as an experience. Be sure to take a swim suit. The tour people furnished us masks and fins. They even had vision corrected masks for we myopic people.

If you decide to go to Hana, give it an entire day. Sunset photos from either south Kihei or Kaanapali are the best. If you go to the Iao valley be prepared to get wet. It gets an average of over 300 inches of rain a year. A stroll along Front Street in Lahaina is always fun and interesting. The drive north of Kahana is beautiful but should be done earlier in the day as it tends to cloud over a lot in the afternoon. If you are adventurous, continue that drive around the northwest end of the island all the way to Kahului. It is very narrow with a lot of blind corners, but the views are spectacular. Stop at Julia's (Juliasbananabread.com) for the world's greatest banana bread. And definitely plan a trip up Haleakala for sunrise. It will be cold and more than likely very windy, but it is something you will never forget. The Kula Botanical Garden is beautiful and is worth at least a few hours. As far as your 610 is concerned.....I know it can get heavy after a while, but I bring my 610 with me almost everywhere I go on the island. Something less just won't do a lot of the time. For lenses, to keep it light, a big range zoom like the 28-300 is very useful, and if you have the space, an ultra wide like the 16-35 or 14-24 comes in handy. And with all of the blue sky and water, don't forget a good quality circular polarizer filter. BTW, my avatar is from south Kihei at sunset

Sarah Bott. She would do a great job squiring you around. She worked for the Hawaii State Park system on Maui and I'm sure she could take you to or recommend scenic locations.

Thanks Bob, I am taking your advise and going with the 610, the 28-300 and 28-75 and a 50 1.8 and filters. I don't have anything wider at this time, and don't have money left at this moment for one, not even enough time to rent. I think I will get some great shots anyhow. We decided to take a shuttle tour of the road to Hana. I don't trust the other two in my party to drive, and I want to enjoy the scenery myself.

Thanks everybody for your help. Will share when I get back.
