My guess is that the issue is Windows 8. Elements 10 is an older version (they are on 12 now and 13 should be coming out this fall), so they may not be totally compatible.

Probably an issue of touch screen technology.

Possibly a memory issue,
Reboot, open and work in Elements without opening other programs. If the close message does not reoccur or appears less often, it will be memory.

I don't have PSE 10, but do have PSE 9,11,12 so I am looking at PSE 9.

Go to Edit > Preferences > Performance tab
It should tell you the available ram and what it needs. If memory (ram) is tight, reduce the history levels to say 20.
Have you set a scratch disc?

The image attached is from my PSE 9

If memory is not the problem then see above posts re Win 8 - the worst op system since Win ME and Vista

Computer guy here. I'm a Microsoft Partner and we get software up to a year before the public. Seems that Microsoft gets every other version of Windows right. XP was solid, Vista had great ideas but failed in the execution, so badly that Vista version 2 had to be renamed Windows 7, which was a good version. Windows 8 tried to make the whole world fit a touchscreen paradigm and the project manager got fired for doing away with the desktop and the Start button (don't worry, he had nearly $100 million in stock options). Windows 9 beta will be available next month for public testing and out next year. Looking forward to it...

Does Windows 8 still use virtual memory? When I was using windows, I never could understand default virtual memory of ½ megabyte on a 250gb HDD. If you still use VM, increase to 1-25gb. That should stop a lot of program "spontaneous closures."

I have found a solution that hopefully works= start PSE to get welcome screen. Hold down Ctrl + shift and click Organizer. Keep holding till Catalog window shows. Select your catalog & click repair.select 'repair anyway' even if PSE doesn't find problems.then for good measure, click optimise. If that fails then repeat above steps to catalog window click new to create new catalog.if able to import photos & Organizer works , then there was a problm in old catalog Which all means great deal of work but great opportunity to clear out rubbish!!!!

Next time, do it Wite (Sorry, couldn't resist)

I'm not too sure about specifics; it used to be under Control Panel. Will try to find out on a public computer I have available.

This should not be a problem. Many people have installed Elements 10 and earlier versions on Windows 8 and 8.1 and they work just fine.

When Elements crashes, stops responding, etc., one should first look at the program itself. Most of the time a corrupted or damaged Preferences file will cause Elements to act up. The Organizer and the Editor have separate Preferences file. Second, one should look at add-ons ( such as plug-ins, actions, etc.) which were recently installed. They also could make Elements crash if they are not the right ones.

I doubt this is a problem of incompatibility with Windows 8. If this were the case, Elements would have acted up the moment it was installed on Windows 8. Jayem had said:

Here are Adobe suggestions to improve Elements performance.
