On the other hand, I wonder how much money UHH has saved people by leading them to less expensive alternatives: used/reconditioned equipment, simple solutions for camera malfunctions, less costly equipment, DIY alternatives.

I think the scales would tip toward the spending side, but I also think we have saved a lot of money through advice given here.

OK, good point. but don't you think that the answer to the question is a purely personal one?

So, buy it with the 50% you saved.

It's kind of like those 50% off coupons. You save 50% but you still spend 50% that you wouldn't have spent if you didn't have the coupon.

Since joining UHH I've only aquired two prices of gear.
I had a couple of quinceaneras lined up two years ago and bought an 85mm 1.8 for those shoots.
Earlier this year I replaced my old Canon 270 speedlight with a 600rt so I can start to put together an on-location speedlight kit. That's about it.
Otherwise I have learned a lot about things like how sensors work, nuances of CoC and that old Nikon shooters are...., well....,just that....OLD!!

First i bought a DSLR then i found the uhh, and totally got caught up in the "must have syndrome" and even though i didnt know how to fully use my camera i bought another, which as a total amateur i didnt need even though it is a better camera, when i have needed advice this is the place to go and my photographs have definately improved because of the advice i have gleaned from here.

Yes. Some people spend money after reading post, and others save money with less expensive equipment or a free repair. I've done both.

I wonder how many Pro-100 printers Canon sold because of the $300 rebate that was discussed here so much.

Well said Jerry - maybe we should run a thread 'my best value piece of kit purchased after reading UHH' - I think it was my D600 (nik) after learning how to clean a sensor and D600 were going cheap because of the well documented 'dust/oil' thing!

For me, "best value" has to be the Canon Pro-100.

I've saved so much money since being here that I should be able to retire in 2052 when I'm 100 years old!

I can't blame UHH for my acquisition syndrome. I had it when I was working full-time too. Always had to have some kind of new tool.

The biggest difference UHH has made for me, other than the wealth of info here, is that now I'm comfortable buying refurb and used and have learned who are the good and bad guys to buy from.

When I first started following the Hogg, I learned more about how to use the equipment to make better and more consistent images. The more I read I discovered the limitation of my current gear and developed a case of GAS. More thorough reading helped me to narrow my choices and introduced me to more budget friendly alternatives. I also met som great people who helped me make more intelligent purchases(thanks again Gene51) and acquire gear that I won't soon grow out of. In my case the scales are just about balanced. By the way, what is S. A. S.?
