Rumor is that the Sun will burn out next year too. Right now we don't have any specifications on a D9300 or anything. If you constantly put off purchasing because something else MIGHT be out in a few months you will never have anything for fear of missing the next great thing. Buy what you want or need now and deal with the other later.. Maybe, by then you will want or need a full frame and use the current as a backup.

That wasn't my intention.

My only DSLR camera right now is a Sony Cyber-shot 20.1mp DSH-H200. I was at Costco yesterday and they have a sale on the D7100 (1449.00) and the D5300 ($1100.00). I retired 3 years ago and have been taking my Polaris XP Ranger Side by Side to very remote areas of Southwest Virginia and taking a lot of 35mm pics of old farms, stills, abandoned tractors, creeks, landscapes, etc. Sometimes the landowners kids have to show me the way and I take their pics along side or they run in the creeks or climb the trees while I am setting up and take their pics. I then mail the photos to the parents and keep the CD's. Some days I use 4 or 5 rolls of film and shoot 200 digital pics. I still like the quality of my 35mm pics best !!! The parents have been asking me to come back and take family portraits because they like the pictures that I send them. At Costco, I liked the feel of the D7100 better than the D5300. The D5300 seems small in my hand !! The Costco reviews were all basically positive. I know that I need a better digital camera for sure but which one and if so, will I ever get the quality for the family portraits that these people seem to like and how would I print them ??? I like Costco because it has a very flexible return policy !!! Thanks

I bought the D5300 as an upgrade to my D5100. My wife suggested I buy "the better" camera, the D7100.
Yes, I guess the D7100 is a better camera, but the fact that it doesn't have the articulated rear display was a big negative. Also, at my level of photography, I felt that the D5300 was more suitable for me.

BTW, I bought mine from Beach Camera via Amazon. It came with the Nikkor 18-140mm, f/3.5-5.6, AF OS lens which I find is tack sharp and an excellent walk around lens.

The price was $1046 complete...no tax as I live in NY & they're in NJ, and free shipping. USA Warranty.

I purchased my 7100 on line from B&H for less than Costco and it is USA. I love my 7100 and can use the lenses from my old Nikon D80.

Phil, I love your photos on your link. May I ask what lens you used on your D7100 when you took photo #1555 (the one with the bird flying)?

Bob - there are several good comparison articles on the Web. Try this one: http://www.lightandmatter.org/2013/equipment-reviews/nikon-d5300-vs-d7100-which-should-you-buy/

I've had a D7000 since late 2010 and love it. The substantial feel of the magnesium alloy body is a big plus to me...and I think it has taken some physical abuse well.

Can't tell if the $350 difference is really important to your decision.

If my D7000 disappeared I'd buy a 7100 immediately. Good luck with your research.

  I also have a D5100, taken on a two week vacation to Portland, OR in June because my D7000 was being repaired. The D5100 photos came out beautiful. Also, the D5100 is 1/2 lb. lighter weight than the D7000. If my D7000 disappeared, I don't know if I'd replace it with a D7100 or D5300. At 71 yrs old, the lighter weight of a D5300 is a big deal with all the walking and hiking we do. The being said, I love the D7000 in spite of the weight because it's a joy to use in so many ways. I like the D5100 but it's much harder to change settings on the fly than the D7000..

dcampbell52 wrote: "Obsolescence is in the eye of the beholder." Quite true, but my point was that a person should not buy more camera than they can use effectively for in a few years the technology will have moved ahead rendering the camera obsolete compared to the newer offerings. I have a Canon G7 that I paid some serious dollars for and provided some great images. Now that camera is the one that I carry in the glovebox in one of my cars to get the "grab shots" that come up from time to time. In my other car I have a Sony H-55 that does the same job, provides an equivalent image(the Sony has a nice fast 10x optical zoom)and since it is a couple of years newer it cost well less than half the cost of the Canon.

A wise digital camera buyer will consider his purchase more like a rental, something to meet the immediate need only to be replaced when something better comes along. I started my Nikon journey with a D5000, got several years good service from it and sold it when the D5100 came out. Since I sold the D5000 when they were still in stores I got a good price and applied that money on the newer model, the D5100. I found the D5100 to be technically a better camera and delivers better images than the D5000, which was no slouch in the image department. I could have spent more money for a better camera when I bought the D5000 but the images wouldn't have been all that much better and I would have been paying for features I didn't need.

One of the places I put the money I saved was in Nikon's 35mm f1.8 single focal length lens. At just a bit over $200 it is a bright, sharp, constasty lens that makes some great images, especially when you open it up to blow out the background. Like I told my customers, buy as little camera as you need and spend your money on lenses. You'll get better pictures that way.

Just my opinion, your mileage may vary.

The D7200 will be along in X months. It will be significantly better, and the D7100 price will drop by 20%.
But you can have a lot of fun and shoot a LOT of photos in X months. Life's hard at times, huh?

When I was reading about the D7200, I paused for a moment about whether or not I should wait. But like others have said, there is always going to be something better. So I either buy nothing or enjoy photography today.

I would never buy a camera from Costco. First, if they put a camera on sale they will have a tiny notice informing you that you will pay state sales tax on the pre-sale price. They are a rip-off as far as I am concerned. Go to BandHphoto.com and buy your gear. Adorama is very fair too. Screw Costco and their so-called sales!

I buy nearly everything from B&H or Adorama. When I worked for Nikon, I could buy at a 10% discount from Nikon, BUT, I had to pay shipping and local sales tax. Between shipping and sales tax, it was going to cost me $34.50 more than either of those 2 because I didn't have to pay tax or shipping.

I have both cameras. The 7100 is more complicated than the 5300 and much more versatile than the 5300. Having said that, the 5300 is a great camera. Have never taken a bad picture with it. If money is not an issue, I would go with the 7100 and grow into it

The D5300 is no slouch. It has the advantage of being lighter and smaller, but it also lacks a few features of the 7100, including what for me is critical, the dual SD card slots. Another nice thing about the 7100 is that it will work with all the Nikon lenses while the 5300 has a more limited lens capability.

Go to a site like 'snapsort.com', click on 'compare' and choose the d7100 vs the d5300. It will answer a lot of questions for you. Knowing what I know at this point (not much) I would choose the d7100, perhaps in a kit with something like the 18-140mm zoom which is a pretty good lens coupled with the d7100. Whichever you choose, you should get really great shots. Best of luck.
