I too have just updated from a Nikon D300s to a D610. Yes processing JPEG files in CS5 worked, my RAW images are not recognized. Adobe does show upgrading possibility but when process completed , CS5 was not ungraded. I am now considering upgrading option from CS5 to CS6.

Does any have a good purchase option ?

Does Elements Verizon 12 recognize Nikon 610 RAW files.

Hope someone can answer my questions.

Just do CC and get Photoshop and Lightroom - best deal out there at $120 a year for both.

Yes. As the current version of Elements, 12 will use the current version of ACR (Adobe Camera Raw). And, as each update to ACR takes place throughout the year, it will accept it. If I remember right the ACR version is at 8.6.

When Elements 13 and Lightroom 6 are expected in the fall. They will use whatever ACR that becomes current and upgrades to ACR as cameras are released. The then "old" Elements 12 and Lightroom 5 will not get ACR improvements. Of course it won't matter unless you buy a newly released camera.

You might have some difficulty in finding CS6 as it is the second generation back though some retailers might still have a copy somewhere. I also recall that Adobe was the only place where you purchase upgrades for CS6 from older versions. Going with the 9.99 a month option for Photoshop and LR may be your cheapest alternative. I held off until this deal was offered but I am keeping my CS6 copy installed also.

Ok I have never had this problem since I have never shot in raw till now. It does not have a problem with the jpegs.
Before some of you start nagging me, I tried to search this first.
The reason for this comment is that now and than someone cannot answer a question without getting their panties in a bundle.

LR3 is an older version of Lightroom and will not recognize the Raw / Nef files of any cameras that were produced after LR3 was replaced by LR4 and that replaced by LR5. The same will be true down the road when LR5 is replaced by LR6. At some point Adobe and other software manufacturers use the updated release of cameras to move users to buy the new software to support them. Since Nikon just released the D610, Lightroom 5.x is the only one that will support it (and that support was just added in one of the last updates to LR). I hope this helps.

NOTE: Jpg files are supported by all software because it is an standard unto it's self and doesn't change or improve. Raw/Nef files are constantly improving with new cameras and Camera firmware updates.

Convert to dng is a free option that will fill the gap until you upgrade your software, btw.

You should be able to update your Camera Raw importer all by it self. When I installed Ps CS6 it came with Raw 8.1, I immediately upgraded to v. 8.3. I believe the current Ps CC Raw version is 8.4. Also there at least used to be a way of getting new camera profiles for new camera models that come on the market.

As it turns out I don't have to really be concerned for my cameras because Pentax uses the Adobe DNG format as its native Raw format. You can use the Nikon to DNG converter too. One of my instructors has a newish Nikon Df (the retro looking one). It is not quite as new as your Nikon D610. And she in a pinch had to use the converter and go to DNG. From there you can go TIFF or PSD. Though personally I have not done any of this from with in Lr4 or Lr5, only Ps CS6. I've barely begun playing with Lr.

Windows and MAC O/S don't open Raw or Photoshop or Lightroom files either. JPG / JPEG and TIF / TIFF are standard files formats that virtually all computers and programs can handle. Also do be aware that you must PROCESS your Raw files to make them look good or superior. JPGs are corrected right out of the camera (as far as they can be).

P.S. I know what you mean about people jumping on you. also I might have opted for the D800E ;-)

So Dave should I spring for LR5, I think that's the current one. I hate to spend anymore if I don't use it much, so far have not used the 3 much. My new camera is a D610

If I may interject, you have sprung for a great camera so why would you want to hesitate to upgrade to a modern version of LR that offers so much more than LR3? Just asking.

Perhaps this is being penny wise and pound foolish.

Do you use film? With digital if you shoot in Jpeg the camera is doing your darkroom work. If you use RAW then you take it into LR3 =Lightroom3 or LR5 or Photoshop or whatever program you use to process/develop like you do with film.
And we do know that the "great photographers" of film days spent many many hours in their darkrooms...Dodge and burn where there best friends.

Unfortunately really old versions of LR or CS are not able to upgrade to the most current version of ACR -

Most of the great film photographers did much of their work in their darkroom -- in fact Ansel Adams is quoted as saying his greatest work was done in his darkroom. So film WAS altered to achieve the great photos, just with chemicals.

You will not only have to use Lightroom 5, but immediately upgrade it to LR 5.6 to make available the new 610. I've heard there will be a totally new Lightroom 6 announced in a few months, when Canon breaks out its new cameras and lenses. If you use the LR and PS in the Cloud you will see your camera listed there, or there will be a auto update to include it.

Keep in mind LR 3, in the software world, is really an old program. The volume of updates since its release is overwhelming. Cameras, equipment and software have moved on, and so should you.

As an example above. Yes, people do assume you are lazy or don't like a product just because you don't upgrade every 6 months or something. And there is always a learning curve and some "upgrades" introduce new bugs.

I'd rather spend money on lenses and cameras than software as well. I'm still using Office 2000 on Vista Ultimate 64-bit.

I sprung last night. I was hesitating only because I purchased PSE12 at Christmas and really don't use it much, so was not sure about the LR. I have been only editing my photos for the newspaper quickly in Faststone, and only begun to show in raw. Really have not done much editing. Kinda of breakin away from the out of camera mentality.
So I have to say, great Camera, and so far my family shoot is going pretty easy tweaking in my new LR.
