I attempted to make a photo book and went ahead unhappily.
I used the IPHOTO library from negs made tiff or jpeg both and still ended up with low dpi.
So I am investigating programs from Adobe like photoshop and Indesign.

I used ShutterFly and was very pleased for what it's worth.

I've made a few iPhoto books and they have come out very nice. Pricier than Shutterfly though.

I have made books using iPhoto, blurb and shutterfly. I always go back to iPhoto though. I develop the photos in lightroom, export them in a batch with highest jpg settings, import them into iPhoto as an album and go from there. I do select the better quality paper and make sure my images are big enough to use in the spaces I'm putting them. I expect an upgrade when Apple releases the new software so it may be even better. I always make a PDF proof of my books before ordering from anybody and look at it at high magnification onscreen to check for anomalies. Blurb gives me more unexpected weirdness than the others for some reason.

Recent class required a photo book as final project. Class used a variety. If you use Lightroom, Blurb is a good fit. Some of the books were falling apart, some prints were better than others. I used Lightroom/Blurb and upgraded paper. My book came out well. Used black background on every page.

I used Adorama for a few wedding books and was very happy with their quality (as were the customers)!

I'm going to make my own photo book. I will use tables in WordPerfect and set up the pages the way I want. I can put the pictures in chronological order if I want and by subject. By using tables in WordPerfect I can put titles under the pictures describing them. I'm sure the same thing can be done in Microsoft Word.

I can get 9 pictures measuring 3 1/4 x 2 1/2 on a page if I run it horizontally and 8 pictures on a page if I run it vertically. If I have a picture I want larger, I can join two to three table cells together either vertically or horizontally.

I got information from the Internet on how to bind books by hand and will make my own covers. I will print them on a Canon Pro-1 using double-sided presentation paper.

Please use Shutterfly, they purchase their specialty paper from Mohawk Paper. They pay my son tons of money to integrate the product lines of companies they purchase into their core sales.H e makes the money, takes us to diner and doesn't have to borrow money. And that is a good thing.

I have used iPhoto several times to make books and they are excellent quality. I have also used Momento, also good quality and gives you a bit more flexibility with photo sizes and shapes.

I even made family books of my children growing up in iPhoto from scanned photo prints. You must take care not to make photos too large if they don't have the quality.
