Some of these are at 1200mm and no PP except a little saturation. I am not getting rid of my L lense's or my 6D or 7D but this is a great addition to my arsenal..................

Neat first shots! I'd definitely want to be 1200 mm from that gator :) Can't you see yourself getting addicted quickly?
Try using the exposure compensation - pretty much all the time I go to -0.7 With your light-colored spoonbill, that would have helped with detail.
