Thanks. You have been very helpful. I will look into the 10-24 wide zoom and consider trading the 24-120 FX for something DX in that range. It seems I wasted $'s on the FX when it was packaged incorrectly with the D80.

Thanks for your encouraging comment and the welcome note. Based on valuable comments from good people, I will be selling / trading 2 of my 3 lenses and buying two new ones for a total of four, all zoom DX.

If they are working for you don't. FX lenses work just as well or even a little better on the DX format as the FX. The FX lens covers more than the DX sensor so what the DX sensor gets is the sharpest part of the FX coverage. Most of my lenses are FX from the 35mm film days and they are great on my DX cameras. - Dave

While FX lenses will work on DX cameras, you are only using half the area that the lens images. Some argue that is a good thing because when you use an FX lens on a DX sensor camera it uses the center of the lens, which is usually a little sharper.

AH-HA moment for >this< grass hopper.
So an FX rated lens might be a better option if "barrel distortion" could be an issue for... say, landscapes or large flocks of birds taking flight when shooting with any of the DX sensor camera's. (Like mine)
Is that correct?

Thanks Mtn Man, that is a good point to note, for me.

Exactly which 24-120mm FX lens do you have?

There is the very good f/4G VR version (which is worth keeping), while the f/3.5-5.6G and the even older f/3.5-5.6D are not particularly exciting.

As for my expertise, I have been shooting slides (about 45,000) since my first Nikon FTN in 1968. I recently sold on consignment four camera bodies and eleven non-digital lenses. I have attended the Nikon School of Photography three times (however not yet digital). My question on this site was precipitated by conflicting and inconsistent information from photography store clerks; I thought this would be a friendly professional forum to get the correct information. Your answer is that I am probably wasting $'s with my FX lens on a D 5300. That lens was part of a kit package with a D 80 (DX) six years ago; according to you seems that was not such a good "deal" if not properly matched as you imply.

I can see your trying to pull the wool over so body's eyes . any one with the
back ground you say you have wouldent be asking the questions that you did in your opening . and I told you what I think I would do if I were you based on you being a amature. if you have the smarts that you say you do , you should be giving answer's to the kind of question you asked . not asking for answer .

and I never implyed that you take it like that . you came across as you were
unsure if you were getting a FF . so again I was just telling you what I would
do . and I would forget the FF and FF lenses . that's all there was to it , if you dont like the answers , don't ask the questions . if I ever got on here and asked a question I would not say a negative word back to who answered . simply because that would his or her opinion . I would not decipher hidden meanings in there answer that weren't there in the first place

Sure is the truth. There are many who are/were very advanced armatures using film and then when they What change to digital they are at a loss. The basics of composition and exposure are pretty much the same. There were a lot of very advanced folks that just used 35mm and not other formats so the coverage thing is new to them. I worked in 4X5 , medium format, 35mm , and some with Minox spy camera and did my own darkroom work so that I knew the difference. In MY NOT SO HUMBLE OPINION questions should just be answered and just stop the judgement of whether the person is worthy of asking it. - Dave
