Birds in flight using a slow shutter speed.

I've been playing around lately with using a slow shutter speed while shooting BIFs. Typically I shoot at 1/2000 to both freeze action and minimize camera movement. The result is sometimes a surrealistic photo that, perhaps, tells a little more about the motion of the birds. The first three were shot at 1/200, the one of the Skimmers, was shot at 1/800,

Let me know what you think!

Those all look like the blurry shots I shoot, go back to what you were doing before. You had much better photos, just MHO.

To me, No. 2 looks like a wall-hanger. Normally I'm not a fan of that sort of art, but for some reason that one looks terrific to me.

For my taste, #1 is good, #2 doesn't work, and #3 works to show the motion of the bird. In #4 the 1/800 speed is fast enough to capture the birds stopping their motion as "normal." #1-3 shows your experimentation to have some merit, but that it won't always work -- as might be expected. Thanks for showing us another way.

My favorite would be one that freezes the bird but the background is motion blurred. This would not show up easily with a marine background. So I like #1. Keep experimenting, I think you are on track for a different way to look at birds and motion. All the images show promise of this. Maybe a rear curtain sync?

Birdpix you already take the photographs that the rest of us can only try to copy, but these are not to your standard Sorry.

The color and comp in the second make it look very artistic - impressionistic - and I like the effect. Other shots capture the motion and seem to have more of a documentary feel, but I must say I prefer sharper images.

Its great to experiment. My prediction is your "keeper" rate will be a very low percentage. But once in a great while you may achieve something very stunning.
I really like the composition of the last photo, but it begs to be a little sharper, IMO. Only you can decide if you are willing to lose many such nice compositions in the quest for a unique shot.
